Post subject:  trailer brake controller?

I have a 2005 sport with factory installed towing package. I want to hook up a trailer brake control unit. Is there a plug somewhere in the wiring harness under the dash for this? And if so is there a specific controller that will work? Plug and play? or do i just need to hard wire one in myself? Thanks for the feedback.

If you have the tow package, the wiring is 50/50. There is a 'brake' wire behind the driver's kick panel. It's hidden in a white plastic harness. Tap that one for brake signal. Then tap the brown/white wire on the harness on top of the brake pedal for your brake light signal. Then run power and ground to your battery through the grommet in the firewall. Bingo, done. The factory 7-way connector out back will now supply trailer power.

Thanks for the info.

The brake wire for the controler is behind the driver's kick panel and is blue and labled.

If you have the "dealer installed" towing harness it may or may not be wired correctly :ALONE:

Well i found the red brake wire under the white panel, ran some wire thru the firewall from the battery, now i just need to confirm the brown/white wire. I found a brown/grey(mayeb white) in part of a harness that is above the brake pedal. the harness actually runs down and into a "t" with another harness right in front of the white box cover. is this the wire i'm needing? Is there away to confirm this is the right wire. I'm assuming it's not a wire that is wrapped in the main harness that has a protective cloth on it. There are some acel. pedal wires running into this one. All the other harnesses just have some tape around them. Thanks.

The wire you want goes to the switch that's operated by the brake peddal to turn the brake lights on

On mine it was brown/white and it was in a harness that snaps into the top of the brake pedal. I unhooked it to make the harness easier to access and tap into.

I think I got it...Thanks guys. Small bundle of wires(6) coming of the little plunger gizmo that the brake pedal operates. Looks to be more of a white/tan(brown). Hard to see but by default with the other 5 wires it has to be this one. Thanks again.

not to revive an old thread, but is there an easy to use grommet to run the power and ground wires through, or it is just a matter of finding anything spot you can to run the wires through?

There is a rubber firewall grommet above the brake pedal that makes running wiring out to the battery pretty easy. You have to contort your body pretty good to look up in there under the dash and see it though. Obviously, you have to remove the plastic shield from around the pedals and get that out of the way to make access.

I found some kind of plastic plug located on the firewall where it butts up against the inner panel on the driver's side. it's glued/sealed in place but comes out fairly easily. I ran wiring through the hole, dremeled out an opening in the plug to allow the wires through, then put the plug back in place and sealed it up with some grey RTV sealant.

hey will a brake controller work correctly if my brake light is on from some rear dif wiring problems?

Um, it might. The brake signal wire coming from the switch (white w/ tan stripe I think) is the signal that tells the body controller to turn on the brake lights. If the brake lights are already on due to another wiring issue, then the signal from the pedal switch should be pure.

For as many times as brake controller questions come up, a good set of directions should be in the CRD tech section if it isn't already.

I should state that it does work as I used it last weekend and the electric over hydraulic brakes worked great

My 05 didn't include the towing package.. Nothing.. Does that change anything? Still need to dig for the brake signal wire snapped into the top of the brake pedal, what ever color it may be?

And what style of bumper plug do I need?

I dont have any gear so if you have anything.. PM me.

@rebar,

look up the following thread:

I did not have any trailer wiring on mine, so went with Mopar factory wiring sets. A bit more expensive, but WAY less problematic and MUCH more reliable than aftermarket stuff... Been there, done that!

Reviving an old thread... Does anyone have a good place to mount a brake controller. I am 6'2" so I have to contend with knee room and be able to have access to it for emergencies and for adjustment.

I was thinking of getting a first generation prodigy, since I have had good luck with one before, but seeing the possible angle that I may have to mount mine at, I may have to go for a Prodigy 2 instead due to the limited mounting angles for the P1.

Any input will help in the decision making.

In the bottom tray, under climate controls... I can remove it relatively easily, if need be, but so far it has not been in the way. I drilled a big enough hole in the back for wiring, with enough slack to allow disconnection.

Good Idea. I will have to see if my local camper store will let me take a prodigy outside and see if it fits well! I noticed that lil space was pretty useless.
