According to Power Service, their product is “effective in all diesel fuels, including ULSD and biodiesel blends containing up to 20% biodiesel (B20).” It also says that it, “Lowers Cold-Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) as much as 36°F. — keeps fuel-filters from plugging with wax.”

According to Amsoil, their product says, “It is formulated for a broad range of diesel fuels, including #1 diesel, #2 diesel, biodiesel and ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD). It inhibits wax crystal formation and can improve diesel pour point by as much as 58ºF (32ºC), allowing fuel to flow to the engine more easily and improving diesel engine reliability in cold temperatures.”

Amsoil was little more vague on the amount of bio, so out of curiosity I called Amsoil to see how what the difference would be for B5 vs. B50. The Amsoil Technical Department said that there would be no difference in flow between straight #2, B5 or B50 when using their product.

I wasn’t too comfortable with Amsoil’s response, but maybe that’s true????? It would seem that the more bio used, the poorer the flow and CFPP. Anyone else with thoughts on cold flow additives when using bio?

I’ve got three filters on my truck, and one filter is rated at 2 micron, so I can’t sacrifice flow. I’m thinking about adding a fuel heater and that would take care of my worries. We’ve hit -31 this year already and we’re suppose to hit -26 tonight.

I have used a product called Primrose too. It smells just
like PS but if I remember correctly, it works on higher ratios
of biodiesel. They make a few different formulas.

Thanks John. I looked at their website and this is what they say: "WP 4033 is recommended for use at 1:1500 in biodiesel blends B1 through B10. Use at 1:1200 in B11 through B20."

I'll just stick with running B20 during the winter months and play it safe! :wink:

I bought some Stanadyne winterized diesel fuel catalyst. Don't really know how well it works in extreme cold with biodiesel as I burnt up all the biodiesel driving to northern New Mexico where it was cold. Seems to have improved mileage by about 5% though.

I have done some freezer testing with the amsoil product and B-100. I can say that with the suggested amount of additive, there was a difference in cloud point. If memory serves, it was about a 10degf difference. To me, it wasnt enough of a difference to justify the cost.

Well, I went to Albuquerque today and talked to Nathan Gonzales, the owner of Southwest Biofuels. He said that his B20 will flow down to -18. I’m going to add a fuel heater to my fuel system to give me a little extra protection. The fuel heater kit that I’m ordering is the Fleetguard Severe Duty Kit, parts #3836029S, #3837317S. I don’t know if this kit will fit my fuel filter system or not, but I’m going to place my order tomorrow.
