 Post subject: shift point seeking/surging@1600-1800rpm

Howdy all, I hope every thing is well!

The short story is the Jeep came up with a lit cel, and sluggish to the extreme up hills. Also seeking/surging in the Trans between 1600rpms and 2000rpms. If I am over 2 things are smooth but sluggish as far as kick down acceleration. If I am under 15 things are fine. The switching between gears (rpms) no matter what the actual speed between 16 and 2, cycles/surges up and down, up and down.

My first course of action was to clean the MAP again, and change the fuel filters (I have 2 one is a self installed primary of the kind used in the Mercedes diesels). No luck so far.

I do not yet have a scan tool and have not yet been able to pull the cel code (everyone seems to be out for the superbowl).

By the way I have GDE's Ecotune and just hit 40,000.

Just wondering if anyone still has $0.02 left in their pocket before I can get the code read?

Sounds like hunting.

Maybe do a search in this forum for "hunting" and for "lubegard". See if anything looks like what you are experiencing.

Sometimes the valve body will act up if there is not enough fluid in the transmission or if valves get sticky. Lubegard is a good product to loosen things up.

Torque converter clutch being too worn can cause the oscillation between lock and unlock as the tcm (maybe pcm?) trys to accomodate the operation.

I did a search for "hunting" and all I got was a bunch of big game talk (as in elk).

I pulled the code off her this morning, The old P0299. Pulled out the air box to look at the turbo hoses (I noticed oil on the bottom of the turbo from a flashlight inspection underneath). The outlet hose is soft and a little warped but not split, but if it is leaking oil it is leaking oil. The other CAC hose looks perfect. Maybe the PO or the dealer replaced one and not the other.

As I mentioned above the first thing I did was change the fuel filters and clean the MAP again.

I previously bought all the parts for the EHM but then I bought the Eco-Tune and thought this would eliminate the need. Perhaps not.

I have not added a lift pump yet either.

So far she still has minimal power on the flats and can only get to 20 going up a hill.



Is there anyway to clean the turbo without pulling it out?

I would love to get her running reliably while I wait for the new hoses.

If you can only get 20mph on hills, you've got bigger problems than the surging you are experiencing.

P0299 with MAP cleaned and CAC hoses not leaking. Hmm? You better re-post this one to get more exposure.

Example subject line: "Maximum speed 20mph on hills! What to do?"

Is the fuel head primer hard? I mean is there a chance that there may still be some air in the filter?
Is the P0299 the only code you have pulled?
