Post subject: | I'm SCREWED!!! Glow Plug thread BUGGERED!!! Updated |
Got the new tune from GDE and warmed up the garage to start replacing the glow plugs and get to the second one from the front of the motor and it is really tough coming out. Right away I could tell something wasn't right, and sure enough some aluminum is stuck on the thread of the plug! I don't know what do to beside go find a tread tap that fits it and try to clean up the threads. I told my girlfriend that I would be done with this tonight so she can drive it tomorrow to work! I'm screwed, this Jeep is a never ending headache! If I try and clean up the treads, and I don't break off the darn tap in the cylinder head then I still have to worry about the metal shavings that could fall into the cylinder! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Have you tried to screw in the new one yet? Maybe the new one will tap itself if you can get it started? In and out a couple times? Maybe you could make some kind of vacuum attachment with 1/4" tubing and a coffee filter to check for/clean out shavings? I know it is a lot of maybe's, but short of taking off the head, what else is there? |

Chill out, It's time to take a breather. The threads don't look that bad, a retap should fix it. You need to tap it real easy, have a vaccum cleaner handy and attach a home made 1/2" conical paper tube to the end of it so that you can suck the shavings out while your doing it. Go slow and easy.... you can do it. |

Dip tab into grese, the grease will retain most of the metal shavings and prevent most(if not all if very careful) from entering the combustion chamber. |

What I don't like is the part where the aluminum looks to be fused to the thread. Motor not being cooled enough maybe. What color is your coolant and how long ago was the colling system flushed / cleaned. Just checking. |

Just a hunch but you maybe seeing bits of a thread compound like Antisieze which is silver. See if you can clean it out of the plug threads with a knife. |

I know it is a lot of maybe's, but short of taking off the head, what else is there? I did attempt to put a new one in and I didn't like how it felt, also friend the one working old one but it also felt like crap going it! I like your vacuum attatchment idea, I will do that along with the grease on the tap idea. One other this that worries me now is one of the three cracked old plugs has a small piece of it's tip missing. I did hit it on something when I removed it, it was the plug closest to the firewall. I don't know if the small piece is on the ground or in the cylinder! It's so small that I don't think it would hurt anything but i don't want to take the chance. I might have to either try the vacuum with a small hose attached or rent a scope and look in there! Sucks, this was supposed to be a quick job! Why me?!? racertracer wrote: Chill out, It's time to take a breather. The threads don't look that bad, a retap should fix it. I did end up taking a break, watching the game now but I can't stop thinking about my bad luck! tjkj2002 wrote: Dip tab into grese, the grease will retain most of the metal shavings and prevent most(if not all if very careful) from entering the combustion chamber. I have used the grease trick before but didn't think about that in my rage moment! I don't think I would want to leave the grease in the threads when I reinstall the new one. Soni would have to clean the threads ha, fun. |

I have one of these for VW TDI's. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ ... =200353676 That's not the right size, just giving you an idea. I only used it a few times, but it works pretty good. ![]() |

How difficult is it to remove the cylinder head, anyone here done it? Do I need special tools? Anyone have the fsm or at least instructions? |

You would need special tools and it is a big job. Were the broken tips on the glow plugs sooted up or were the breaks fresh? The ceramics can crack and drop into the cylinder if they overheated and failed. Make sure to put a little anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs you are installing. A little clean-up on the threads with a tap, grease and vacuum should prevent fragments from dropping in the cylinder. |

I am going to push the jeep and look for the missing piece on the garage floor, its very small! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Why would you put anti-seize on the threads of the new plugs? dose it stop them from seize in the block |

The chipped off pieces from your glow plug are old. The fracture line propagates over time and vibration. Most likely your engine ate the ceramic a while ago and it may have passed through harmlessly. |

I am about to throw the fuel filter assembly on after I eat dinner! Your post will ease my stomach when I go to start it in a few min! The one hole was missing a few threads but I was able to get it to torque spec after I ran the M12x1.0 tap through with some grease! -crossing my fingers! |

Well I fired it up and it sounded fine, went for a quick ride and she ran like normal! I'm not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't that ha. Weird thing is my Check Engine light is still on, even after the flash from GDE and the plugs being replaced. From what I remember Keith said the only codes he found were the speed sensor, 3 bad Gplugs, and the MAF sensor. All of which I was aware of, I checked the resistance at the Gplug wiring harness and they read good so I don't know what it is now unless it needs to be reset with a scanner and not just a battery disconnect..? I have my Autoenginuity but I need the Chrysler ad-on which I guess I should just get. |

Congrats on the GP change....I have been following the thread as I will be doing the same at some point in the future. I am glad the missing piece of ceramic did not cause a problem now or in the past. I agree that the stuff on the threads was probably not due to a stripped thread. Now, if we can get DC to get a flash for the new metal GPs. I wish MrMopar would weigh in again with some new informations. |
