A last minute long weekend trip took me about 1000 miles (to the coast for a couple days and back). I packed all the luggage in the rooftop clamshell since we needed the trunk for the extra-big stroller.

Can I just say that I'm giddy that I averaged 29 mpg over 2.5 tanks of fuel going about 70mph with the big honkin' box on the roof...and my thermostat is bad, so I never reached operating temps the whole time. I wonder what I'd have gotten if things were all working properly

That's pretty awesome! I only got that high mileage on a long road trip to California from Colorado. What type of rooftop clamshell to you use? I'm looking for more room to store stuff when we go camping.

This weekend reminded me that I love the CRD because of the snow we've had and while my neighbors stay off the roads by staying in, my wife and I are out and about with no worries.

I do need to rub this in, my brother's TDI won't start in temps below 0 deg F, but my wife's GC CRD and my KJ CRD started easily temps much lower!!!!!

If his TDI won't start below zero, then there's something wrong with it - bad glowplugs, wrong oil, weak battery, lousy diesel, etc. My '02 has never failed to start down to -10, and that's nothing for TDIs. I cycle the glowplugs twice when it gets below 15 or so - not really necessary but it does help it start a little quicker and run more smoothly during the first minute or so.

I gotto say I love mine for about the last 2 weeks or so. The blizzard that hit our area pretty much shut everything down for a day and half, that didn't stop me from driving my 25 mile route to help clear my sisters condo parking lot.
oh and now weve been getting below 0 temps overnight for a stretch of days (2nd time this year) and it starts no problem.
i guess you get the good with the bad with this jeep

It's a Yakima RocketBox. Nice length, but mostly room for luggage and long narrow things. Looks like a big fat surfboard on the roof.

I'm with you on the snow. When snow shut down much of the southeast last month, I only waited about 12 hours to start driving again (while I was asleep). I got to do my yearly good Samaritan impersonation, pulled BMWs off of interstate ramps for the second year in a row(yes, for some reason, it keeps being BWMs that get stuck...my wife's quattro with summer tires was almost as surefooted as the KJ...)

The fedex man loves my KJ because without me a few weeks ago he would of never gotten out of my front yard and i am not talking about the fedex van i am talking about the full size delivery trucks he slid his rear end into the ditch in my drive way a little snatch and he was on his way. Gotta love the CRDs

No, its not that at all, trust me. I had an 04 and 06 TDI (5 speeds and had no issue down to -22 deg F even without using my 1500 watt blockheater. My bro's 06 TDI has the DSG transmission. At low temps the fluid is very thick which results in the fluid actually engaging the clutches in the transmission, i.e. significant drag on the battery/starter when attemping very cold weather starts. The bro never took my advice to install a frostheater (http://www.frosterheater.com) or install a zerostart heater in his TDI and is now paying the price. He has new glowplugs and an oversize battery 1050 CCAs I believe-barely fits in there, and has it looked at by dealership and mechanic who serviced his DSG when his DMF flywheel was replaced. Its a DSG thing and a very common issue. In fact, the vicous fluid has caused folks to have issue with vehicle lurching forward (in park) when started in cold weather...a potential safety issue.

There are plenty of new owner compliants in Colorado

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as the Altitude/Cold/No start goes .... There are more than several TDI/DSG owners’ whom presented this No Start issue to VWoA.

VW of America’s roll it should be noted is that of a vehicle distributor. In my instance their response was a herculean effort to wiggle out of its new car warranty obligation. A classic retorhic strategy if there ever was. My stance on the issue was, “Not Bloody Likely” – VWoA and this Customer agreed to $5000.00 as a settlement.

The sharp (and conscientious) Tech at our Denver VW dealership thoroughly examined our new TDI with the people at VWAG technical Line in collaboration. Their findings were the vehicle was within all specs and that the Uber cold DSG was the culprit; The condition was nothing new to the German Tech line I was told ~ “A significantly cold DSG impedes the (TDI emphasis) starting sequence below the threshold of RPM needed for compression ignition to occur. Okay, what to do? Heater’s you say… this open’s up a larger discussion, not at all mentioned on the VWoA new car Monroney Label.

http://www.espar.com , http://www.webasto.us both makes self-contained engine heaters and by virtue of proximity would heat the DSG.
It should be noted these style heaters are VWAG / Audi etc factory options in Europe. VW of America suggested a third party install – yet another discussion entirely; warranty, EPA, third party installer hacks up my new car, etc. Make no mistake; the installation is open heart surgery, fuel lines, interior controls, etc. Now as before, the simple extension cord tethered engine heaters are an option, if not archaistic in a modern diesel car; In North America and only offered in Canada there is now a VW factory (extension cord type) engine heater. Go figure.

In the end, 6sp manual or 6sp DSG – depends how “cold” you wanna get. The DSG/cold condition is real, just ask VWAG.
