So, I've been "shopping" dealers to see who I would trust to do my timing belt service. Saturday I stopped in at an authorized dealer and stopped at service desk and asked if they had done any CRD belt changes. "Let me check with the tech who does timing belts". Service person returns and asks "is that a belt or a chain?" :ROTFL: Didn't give me a lot of confidence!!
I scratched that dealer off my list. Out of 7 dealers so far, just 1 had the tech come to talk to me. He said he has done some, told me about how long it would take, and I really felt comfortable talking to him. Dealer wasn't the least expensive, but I feel he knows what he is doing. Ya can't put a price on that.

Too true. Might be able to find a Dodge dealership that services Sprinter vans.

Mine was just done at a Chevy dealership..... I happen to work at said dealership though. A competent tech with AllData, the write-up on GDE and here in the CRD tech section should have no issues.

Yeah - nothing on the timing belt write ups indicate anything technically difficult -hard part is holding the cams /crank/inj pump in place - factory tools will do that - but some mechanics have work around's.

Sprinter/Cummins shops are good places to start looking.

but find the good mechanic first, look at the name on the shop last.

My philosophy is that if you want to do a job right, do it yourself. Flat rate wage system for tech's forces them to cut corners and rush thru a job instead of taking the time to do it correctly. Pray and mark is what comes to mind in a dealer shop that pays its staff flat rate. If you don't know what flat rate it is is the amount of time that a mechanic will only be paid for a job. It is almost always less than the time you are charged for a service. Assume that a glow plug repalcement is booked at 4 hours of labor (that is what you will pay for the job at let's say $90/hour). The mechanic who is assigned the job earning $15/hour will only got paid for doing the job in 2.5 hours (flat rate) regardless if it takes him MORE or LESS time to do the job. The incentive for the mechanic to earn a living and provide for his family is to do the job as quick as possible. This is why the few times I've had my vehicle in the shop, things weren't done right, e.g. no cotter pins installed when front end alignment was done, bolts/washers and plugs removed not installed correctly, entire wiring harnesses cut and spliced instead of removing parts to get around the wiring harness, oil not added to an engine that had an oil cooler installed as part of installing a factory tow package, etc...etc...
