Recent lurker, first time poster

A few weeks ago, I started hearing a nasty squealing, and occasional clang from the front-right when I was sitting the the driver's seat of my 2006 Liberty CRD. I parked it at home and got an appointment at the dealership. I told the appointment taker that it was probably the turbo, and surprise, that's what it was. They wanted $2800 for the part, but that it was on indefinite back-order. I told them I'd think about it, and tenderly drove it home.

I'm a computer geek by trade, so the first thing I did when I got home was to do a ton of research. I found this forum, and consumed all of the pertinent threads. I found that I could get a pull for $250 or so, a refurb for $600 or so, the OEM part for $2800 if I wanted to wait, or the Green Diesel Engineering kit for $2100. After reading about the number of turbo failures, the pull and the refurb were right out, so it was between the OEM and the GDE kit. I ended up going with the GDE kit. Keith suggested the Torque Converter update, but I couldn't confirm that the ones available on the various MOPAR sites were the upgraded OEM part, so I just went with the Suncoast upgraded TC. Since I was having a new turbo installed, I wanted to get new hoses, so I ordered the Samco turbo hoses.

All of the parts were in by Wednesday last week, and I towed it to Tim's Performance in Tarpon Springs, FL that afternoon. Thursday morning, I had to go on a business trip, but Tim called me around 5pm and said it was all done. He said he didn't know how it ran stock, but that he was super impressed after they installed everything.

I just picked it up today, and I'm as happy as can be. The GDE turbo sounds fantastic compared to stock. The power upgrade is insane. Since the computer was reset, it showed terrible MPG as I drove away, but by the time I returned home, it was up to 24 MPG, which I had struggled to get to in city driving before the service.

This upcoming weekend, I plan on installing the ProVent mod and Gasser Airbox mod, the parts for which are sitting in my living room.

Kieth said there has only been 8 of these such kits shipped to consumers i guess this is #9 i myself would love to own one but i am like everyone else waiting on mine to fail to upgrade or to win the lottery but that happening is .

It was bone stock before the failure. 74,000 miles or so.

Having looked at the turbo taken out, it's got about 1/3" of play. It was going to go kaflooey really soon. I'm glad I didn't drive it to the mechanic to have the GDE kit installed!

Wow the turbo price has gone up in the last year or so. I remember looking it up just to see what it cost after buying mine and it was under $1000 for an OEM turbo now its $1558.25 @ mopar online parts and 1842.80 @mopar parts america. current MSRP for the OEM turbo is $2,660 and thats if you can get it at any of those places. the GDE kit is $2100 with $300 rebate if you are a current GDE tune customer, so if you have a GDE Tune it would be $1800 for the upgrade kit. I know what I'd do if I have a turbo failure. If the OEM turbo price goes up much more its going to be cheaper to upgrade than the lowest online price.
