Hi,
I have a 2005 Liberty CRD that we've owned since about late 2006 (2nd owner). I've been a frequent lurker, but I think I may have a serious problem now. The Jeep developed a loud whoosh noise about a week ago. Very much of a vacuum cleaner sound, but no power loss. I went ahead and replaced the intercooler hoses (they were original and while I didn't see any obvious damage the Jeep has about 100k miles) . I replaced the driver's side hose first and interestingly it seemed a little quieter but still there. Went to drive into town to pick up the passenger side hose, into the turbo. On the way to do that, the Jeep started losing power, smoking heavily on acceleration and making more of a whining noise on boost. We drove home slowly (had only gotten about 2 miles), I picked up the hose in my Wrangler and put it on today.
I still have the whine, more of a whine than a sucking noise now, clearly coming from the passenger side and no power from the turbo. I've been reading for a few hours but not sure if I'm more or less confused. Where should I look next? Blown turbo? How would I check that? Take off the inlet hose and check for damage/play?
Thanks in advance, I'll try to post anything I find here, as well, in case it might help narrow it down... or help someone else.

-Robert

Yup, pull off the intake and check the turbo for excessive play or scoring on the turbo housing.

Also read the noob guide if you have not already.

Welcome to the forum!

Thanks, that was what I thought (I have a Rover with a 200tdi and it had a turbo that had to be rebuilt)... but it's been awhile since I dealt with that.

If it comes to that, does anyone rebuild these? The one on my Rover has been rock solid since it was rebuilt years ago. I had it professionally done and certainly wouldn't want to do that myself, end up unbalancing it and make it worse.

You can look on:
http://car-part.com/

For used turbos, but there don't appear to be any right now. It's funny, but 3-4 years ago people were picking up low milage used turbos on ebay for 75-100 bucks, because nobody needed them, at the same time there were a few dozen for sale on car-part.com.

GDE offers an upgraded turbo package if you want to spend a little more:

I personally can't speak to knowledge about any rebuilt turbo options. You can try searching, but its not a particularly good search engine.

It's not clear to me that you have pulled the air inlet hose from the filter housing to the turbo yet to check the turbo impeller for excessive play. If you do, check that the inlet hose hasn't cracked and sheared off at the turbo clamp. Mine did at about 75k miles and did make the vacuum noise louder. I believe oil contamination embrittles the hose at the clamp connection. At 85k miles my turbo went after a noticible increase in turbo whine but I don't recall any "whooshing" noise before it happened.

If it was me and you find you need to replace the turbo, I'd go the GDE route. It's far cheaper than dealing with the aftermath of a blown turbo and replacing like for like from the dealer. I'm convinced the original turbo design/application is defective.

Just thought I'd mention, you will gain power and economy with the GDE turbo and tune. The GDE turbo (Garrett) is a quicker spooling and higher RPM capable turbo that is superior to the factory turbo in every way. IF you need to go this route, call Keith at Green Diesel Engineering and talk w/ him about factory vs the new style Garrett turbo. He's not one to push his stuff on people, just a great wealth of knowledge on this engine. Pick his brain before going forward even if you are going factory again. He knows a lot and is happy to help out the CRD community.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone, I've reached out to GDE as suggested and Keith has provided some insight already. I had to take a quick work trip but will be digging in again soon.

Well pulled off the air inlet and decided to see if I could detect any play in the shaft of the turbo.... there was a lot, a real lot. So now to look at options.
