I live in Colorado Springs where diesels are required to get emission testing every 2 years. From my research here it seems all they're testing for is opacity and whether the CEL is on. Obviously if I do the ORM, I need to make sure it's plugged back in before testing but what about the EHM? This sounds like something I can do but I'm not sure if it has a negative impact on testing and if it does, is it easy to temporarily reverse?

What they don't know won't hurt them.
When Illinois had emissions testers, most of them were at their mechanical limitations when they used the self serve pumps at the gas stations. When my Jetta Diesel was confirmed to be a Diesel to get out of testing, she looked it over for a half hour trying to see if I hid the spark plugs. Went through the same when I brought in my Perkins powered Chevy.
Sir Sam knows the CO regs and can recommend where you should go to have the tests. If they put you on a dyno that does not have 4 rollers instead of two, it can screw things up and cause problems when all four wheels are not going the same speed. Based upon what I have heard, most of the emissions testers aren't much better than the ones who used to work in Illinois.

If there's any visual inspection - it would fail.
If it's tailpipe only - it would pass.

Personally I can smell it and I'd bet an inspector has the option to fail something obviously non-stock.

I live in the Denver Metro area and within the emission inspection area of the air quality program. I was not aware that the program extended into El Paso County. I don't know if the El Paso County program is the same program as the Denver metro or not. If it is, my experience with my 2005 CRD is relevant. First, I find the metro requirements for diesels confusing and unclear as to whether and how the CRD is subject to emission testing. Second, the "enforcement" of the testing program is through vehicle registration. You cannot renew your registration in the certain years when testing your vehicle is required.

I raised the question about the applicability of testing for the CRD on this forum in the past and members have differing views. The key fact is that my 2005 has not ever been required to be tested in order to receive my registration. My advice is do not assume that you have to be tested until you receive registration information that requires you to do so.

To return your EHM to stock configuration, just take the black plastic cover off the engine, and find the EHM in the rear and on the top of the engine. Assuming, the original hose was plugged and not removed, just unplug it and replace the EHM with the stock hose. The hoses just slide on and off. Should take less than a minute and not require tools.

Whenever I take mine in for service (which is practically never), I just remove the EHM and reconnect the vent. a screwdriver and about 5 minutes and I'm stock again.

You don't even have to remove the hose, If questioned, just explain that the hose goes to the turbo preambulator and is part of the improved transmorgifier feedback system.

chances are no diesel place is going to notice the rubber hose disappearing into the engine bay oblivion at the independent diesel testing stations here.

But even then its easy enough to undo for testing that its not a big deal. back in the summer of 09 when I last had to get the jeep tested I had to plug back in the MAf and the FCV to get the CEL off for the test, but I don't think I did anything with the ORM.

If you have an 05 the rear wheel only rollers won't bother it, an 06 with the ESP means you will need to find a 4 wheel diesel testing station.

What part of the springs are you in? My CRD lives on the north side of town by the black forest.

I'm in the same general area near Powers and Dublin. I'm in the Patriot Blue 2005 with the Eagles sticker on the rear side window.

I've gone to Exhaust Readers on Nevada in the past and haven't had any trouble so I'm guessing they just use the 2 rollers. I'm not due again until next summer.

I'll probably try and tackle the EHM and ORM next weekend.

Im also in the springs, and just had to take my truck in for emissions. It was kind of funny to watch the guys at exhaust readers try and figure out how a 200 horse CAT was making over 300HP :ROTFL: Never the less, it passed with no problem. My liberty has not been tested yet, and I had some of the same questions. All I'v done is the ORM and EHM. It will be really easy to hook the hose back up, and plug in the sensor, so Im not really worried about it. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread though.

I always return the CRD to bone stock before state inspections or dealer visits for warranty work. Just don't want to push my luck.
