I unplugged the MAF connector Sunday morning and have since started the CRD 11-12 times, but have not seen the CEL come on. I'll check the codes this afternoon to see if it's registering. Does the CEL come on during the start-up lamp test? I don't recall seeing it lit.

Yes, the CEL comes up when the key is in the ON position and the engine not running. You could have a bad bulb? A code should definitely be logged with it unplugged.

My sport never shows a CEL either, it must have a bad bulb as well?

I borrowed a friend's code reader and it reported P0102 (MAF), P0069 (MAP BARO - I need to clean that), P0401 (EGR). I also got two other codes, P1267 and P1261. Haven't had a chance to look them up. As far as I know, the codes haven't been cleared. Will check the CEL bulb and MAP this weekend.

Thanks,
Loyd

P1261 failed #1 glow plug
P1267 failed #4 glow plug

These need to be changed as soon as possible. All the codes will return during the next warm-up cycle or two most likely. Time to get the hands dirty.

Did you buy it new because these are a lot of codes. Sounds like someone clip the wire that lights up the amber engine on your dash.

If I remember correctly, it is not a bulb that you can replace but an LED. Again IIRC, you have to replace the whole instrument panel board.

I bought it used a few weeks ago. It's run pretty good to me, but I'm new to diesels.

I recall reading some availablity problems but that may have been with the ceramic-tip plugs, and searching for Bosch 80041 is yielding out of stock. Are the 5v metal-tip plug and module kits now available to the dealers?

The 5 volt metal glow plug kits are available through the dealer or online if you want to save some cash. It will require a dealer flash upgrade due to the voltage change and different PWM % from the ECM to power the glwo plugs correctly. The stock of ceramic glow plugs is most likely gone by now and Bosch stopped producing them due to some significant design flaws. The kit part number is on this forum somewhere or you can look at the GDE forum as we list it as well.

Take it back where you brought it, as I suspect it was already broke and they cleared the codes and disabled the light.

Unfortunately, I bought it from a private dealer, not DCX. There is no warranty period for as-is sales.

Anyway, was able to remove instrument cluster today, and the MIL and ABS LEDs were pried from the circuit board (they are surface-mounted). Scratch marks are evident on the solder plates. Will post pics.

The DCX dealer quoted a replacement for about $650, $850 installed. The service manual says optional LEDs may not activate automatically and require the diag tool to enable. Since the panel is common to all Liberty models and the ECM holds the odometer and trip values, I'm not sure which options need enablement. I may try a salvage unit.

This afternoon I checked both sides of the instrument panel. The left side had no alterations.

The right side, however, had the MIL and ABS LEDs pried off. The rear fog lamp LED spot is unused in US cars.

There should be plenty in a bone yard. Dealers that do tricks as that should be reported. Enough complaints can put them out of business.

But we don't know if the used car dealer removed them or the person who traded it in did.
But my money is on "honest john's used cars" :2cents:

Does anyone know if the white cluster from an 02-04 Liberty is compatible with the 05? eBay has many and they look the same physically but I'm concerned with the wiring harness.

Not having the CEL is a blessing, especially if the wife drives it

Ouch, this is a tough lesson. Never buy a used car without connecting up a scanner first. I wonder if prev owner killed the MAP trying to clean it.

Find a friend who is handy with a soldering iron and you should be able to replace these LEDs for a few cents each.

Was this sold with a service history?

The state Attorney Generals office would be a good place to file a complaint. I guess they really gave the screws to the OP leaving him with an expensive GP repair?
