has anyone tried a longer receiver in the crd. The normal length is a major pain to get the trailer on b/c of the spare tire. also, i want to put a bike rack on the wheel that hits the brake fluid cap on the trailer.

So, it appears if I get a longer receiver, problem may be solved. Just pulling a pop up camper.

Flipping the spare tire mount will help. :JEEPIN:

Nice solution to the towing issue but I wouldn't want to have the tire on top all the time adding wind resistance when not towing.
Maybe just on top when towing?

Meh. Mines been up top for a month or so now and I have not noticed much of a change in mileage. Towing is gonna kill the mileage anyways.

I got a longer hitch to put into the receiver so I would not have to play around with the spare tire.
If it works with my 7K trailer, should work with your camper.

I made a longer reciever to insert. The ball is about an inch behind the spare tire. It works great. I pull a pop up camper most of the time and sometimes a car trailer.

Flipping the spare mount over moves the spare up and tiltes the bottom of the spare inward :SOMBRERO:
I have plenty of room for my standard length Draw-tite WDH hitch.
It's a zero cost easy fix :-)r

This is by far the best solution. I bought a 14" ball mount from www.ontheball.com and that clears the spare just fine. Now I can tow whatever I want, don't have to worry about removing my spare, and don't have to fool with extensions, lowering my ball, etc. etc.

I've had my KJ up to around 11,000 lbs. GCW with zero issues.

flipping the spare tire bracket gains height? How much, and does it cause problems with the rear window?

i've tried flipping the spare tire...wasn't happy with the result.

i think i'm going to try the longer receiver. we have bikes, canoe, popup...not willing to drill into the popup to put stuff on top of it.

Yes it gains height and it's tilted in at the bottom.

I have a stock size spare and cover and the glass clears by 1/2". The spare just touches the verticle surface of the bumper on the bottom.

It's a ten minute job to flip the mount over. An impact wrench helps because the bolts were tight.

With a mount that is 10" from the pin to the center of the ball the ball is 5.25" below the tire. The rear of the ball is inline with the rear surface of the spare.

Again, it's a ten minute job and costs nothing. Try it :JEEPIN:

I have a longer hitch as well, it was supplied by my dealer when I bought my jeep in june of 06. I've towed lots including my parents 24' cabin cruiser with no issues.
Good luck

Count me in for the "Flip the Spare" crowd. Makes a world of difference in getting things hitched. I use a LOT of different bars and pintle hooks, so getting ONE custom longer bar would not work for me. I also don't like the idea of a longer bar, because that also increases the tongue weight stress on the hitch points. Shorter bar = higher potential weight carry and better handling.

If you had a problem or wanted to try tilting the top of the spare MORE away from the door (to gain even more clearance at the hitch) a couple fat washers from Home Depot probably wouldn't hurt, and there is plenty of thread available on those bolts to work with.
