A few days ago I lost my Part and Full Time 4 wheel drive. There was a loud thunk and then a consistent rattling up front. My mechanic took the shaft out so I could drive it and he ordered a new one..

There were 85 on back order at the time because the design is so lousy Chrysler is rebuilding it??? He asked about a recall but there was none they were willing to admit. He said it was the worst design he had ever seen on a drive shaft to differential joint.

Anyone have any information on a recall or possible recall. Apparently this is happening a lot.

Why would there be a recall on a wearable part? It's essentially the same thing as your L&R axle shafts which will also wear out and need to be replaced one day too.

Recalls cover safety issues.

Have your mechanic see if he can source the part from a place that remanufactures CV axles, the front drive shaft has CV joints.
In the case of remanufactured CV axles/drive shafts they reuse the shaft its' self and replace the joints and boots with new.

Rebuilt they clean, repack if they can and replace the boots.

Repair they only replace the bad joint and boot.

Refurbish/recertify, they wipe off the boot on a salvage yard CV axle/drive shaft.

So if Refurbushed is good enough for you, buy the one from the salvage yard and wipe off the boots with WD-40 :-)r :-)r
and save some money

PS: Good Salvage Yards wipe off the CV boots with WD-40 and offer a warranty, sometimes as good as OEM. :)

I looked over the O'Reilly site. I will talk to my mechanic on Monday. The drive shaft is back ordered so there may be plenty of time to investigate it.

There are two models in what you sent the link for. I assume there are two different differentials hence the two kits?

Thanks,

Well since virtually all newer light duty 4wd's and almost all AWD's use the same setup it's not a issue, they wearout plain and simple. The back order is due to supplier issues they are still trying to sort out after Chrysler went under,in some form or another almost all Chrysler parts are or have been on back order in the last 2 years.

Look close, one joint is forward, the other is rearward. Do you need the forward or rearward joint?
