2005 Liberty CRD, symptoms are: cranks easily and runs great if temp is in the 60's or higher but won't start below that except when the block heater is plugged in. Jeep shop and an independent shop both checked it and said that the glow plugs were working and could find nothing wrong with it. Also after it has been run and is fully warmed to operating temperature it is again hard to start. I need to get it fixed, I'm ready to sell or trade for a Wrangler. |

Do you know what kind of diagnostics your mechanics ran? If you can post everything that for sure checked out OK, it will give people here a good place to start. Also, I assume no fault codes since the dealer didn't mention it... Is that right? |

Could be a variety of issues Before doing anything please consider the following: 1. Installation of a lift pump. I have a Kennedy lift pump and it noticeably improves starting 2. Replace fuel head with a Racor one. The racor fuel head is awesome and is made to fit the Liberty (same mount pattern) and can use temp sensor, has fuel heater, and WIF sensor port. Air in system can cause hard starting. If neither of these help, please measure resistance of each glow plug. I've had incredibly hard starts even when the plugs were at the upper normal range limit of acceptable resistance values. Replacing them allowed me to start as low as -18 deg F with no issues. If that doesn't work, a stuck EGR (stuck open) or a partially stuck closed Air Flow Control valve can also cause hard start issues but probably be and issue for both warm and cold starts. Also, if your battery is >3 years old, it could be the battery. As temps decrease, battery capacity also is reduced. Glow plugs turn on about 40 deg F which puts further drain/strain on battery. Crank speed on the CRD is pretty slow and marginal as far as I'm concerned and even the least amount of reduction in starter crank speed could make it harder to start....cold wx: less battery capacity, drain of glow plugs, oil viscosity increases resistance on starter....all of which can cause a start issue. Try a jump start or a fresh battery. I use a 200amp battery start assist to rule out battery when I slightly weak glow plugs. |

This sounds very similar to a recent topic I read from one of the guys here. An injector shop ended up finding a problem with one of his injectors. I think it had something to do with loosing pressure through in injector #4. I'm not sure if I will have time to find the topic though. |

Sidebrake: does this sound kind of like the injector problem you had? jimaire: check out: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=57632&p=655079&hilit=crank+but+no+start#p655079 |

I'm working on a something that might help if it is in fact a fuel issue: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=59446 |
