Post subject:  Thump in diesel fuel tank

I have a 2006 CRD up here in Minnesota. For the last month, I hear a swooshing and thumping sound in the fuel tank when I make an abrupt stop.
The swooshing and thumping goes on for 5 sec or so after I stop & only if the tank is down to 1/2 tank or less. It sounds like a chunk of ice hitting the fuel tank wall.
Could anything have come loose in the tank to make this noise? Thanks for any advice on how to diagnose and fix the problem.

Sounds like you have to get out and make sure it's coming from the fuel tank. If it's a chunk of ice I supposed it could do damage to your sender unit. Maybe a can of Power Service 911 will get rid of it otherwise you have to drop the tank.

The good think about ice is that it melts. Can you get it into a heated garage for 12 hours? Then drain the tank and dispose of the fuel, if it is water related.

Before you drain the tank, take it back out and make sure that it WAS ice (i.e. having it in the garage overnight will have melted it and no sound for a while at least). THEN you can go do all the hydrophobic activities :)

I would be very surprised if there was ice in the tank... diesel from anywhere in the state is going to be treated. (With the winter we've had this year I imagine they would have a hard time even storing it without it being treated!) Unless you're using home brew bio diesel or filled up out of state?

I would check if the tank itself is loose. I know it sounds a little crazy... but its only held up by 2 straps (4 bolts) and would definitely rock or sway (creating a serious thump) if loose.

Edit: Sorry, I just re-read ... you didn't say you thought it was ice, just that it sounded like it. Anyway, the fuel sending unit is a very simple part on the CRD since there's no actual fuel pump attached to it... it's a bunch of plastic + the sensor to read the fuel level. It's possible some of broke off and could be floating around in there... but it seems unlikely. I'd check if the tank straps are loose first.

Just checked the tank/straps--all tight. Still swooshing & thumping away with each stop.
Just removed the cargo carpet to get to the access panel but, surprise, no access panel on this 2005 CRD. So, the tanks gonna come down next weekend. Words of wisdom would be appreciated.

It's a long post string regarding installing an in tank pump but there is insight on fuel tank removal scattered through it. Short version appears to be 1) don't have much fuel in tank to reduce weight; 2) support tank with floor jack (I'd be inclined to use a small piece of 1/2" plywood between the jack pad and the tank as a buffer; 3) remove strap support bolts (some remove all 4, some remove just front or rear 2); 4) lower tank enough to disconnect hoses and wiring; 5) pull tank out from under Jeep. Install is the reverse. Apparently is a bit more complicated if you have a hitch and/or fuel tank skid plate but should not be too difficult.
