The Jeep just started doing this the other day, I know its not CRD specific but it is a CRD and I know lots of the diesel guys know their stuff! I went under the jeep and took a quick video mostly to record the sound. Let me know what you think it is, I'm guessing a dry u-joint but it doesn't have any play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVodLS3jNiE |

Sounds like it's dry and letting you know "replace me before I break". |

I'd get ready with the grease gun. Sounds brake related. |

I have seen and heard that, its the u-joint, I greased it but no dice. The power-train warranty replaced it, now nice a smooth. Cheers! |

Are you sure its not coming from the rear wheels (which are turning) ? The internal parking brake shoe in the rear hubs makes a noise like that when it breaks free from its bracket. A fairly common problem based I believe. |

crap I don't remember seeing any grease fittings on the joint! I will look and see if it will at least stop the noise until I get a chance to change then out. Stopped at Napa and picked up some HOAT coolant and 2 ujoints. They are USA made and grease-able for just under $15, not bad. I know its not the service brakes or the park brakes because I had them apart last night! The park brake shoes are wasted so I took the loose material off and adjusted then so they were very loose and it still made that noise! I should have picked up some part brake shoes while I was at napa dang it. Napa wants like $250 for a reman alternator, so I'm going to get Advanced Auto's $150 deal I think. All my timing belt stuff came in... frikkkkin money pit! |

I got my U-joints from NAPA, they gave me the wrong size and I didn't know it until I took it apart... First time NAPA screwed me... |

Thanks for the vid I noticed the rear wheels are turning. I hope your being careful! We don't want to loose you for the sake of a video. It sounds brake related to me also. A dry u-joint can make a squeaking or metallic sound. My experience with bad u-joints they will clunk when they get worn. With the engine running and your foot on the brake, shift the car from park into reverse and listen for a clunking noise as it goes into gear. Many times if they are worn bad enough you can grab hold of the drive shaft and shake shake it. If the u-joint is worn you can easily see the play in it. (Don't do this while it is running) |

well as I said its not the brakes, I took the brakes apart and checked them out, and the parking brakes are falling apart but its not them either. If I realized this in the first place I wouldn't have disassembled the brakes in the first place, the sound only occurs under load. It only makes the noise in drive under load with the brakes on lightly or off while accelerating. To me it sounds like u-joint or something in the diff, let me know if you have any other ideas. oh yeah, the calipers and friction were replaced last year, so while I first was thinking brakes and getting mad it was unlikely that the sound was brakes. I feel like I'm mumbling, sorry! |

Well it was the rear u-joint, it didn't have play it was just binding. I'm sure the were OE so it was time. Replaced them with greasable Percision joints from napa, well the first two were.. I let a few needle bearings fall in one and I smashed them so I had to run out and look for another one tonight. It really is sad how the part stores will only stock and push their cheap china brand parts. Advanced has some US made joints but they weren't greaseable and their china ones were, Autozone only has junk duralast so I skipped them, NAPA was closed, so luckily o'rileys was open and has the same joints NAPA does. All fixed. |
