 Post subject: ANOTHER bad dealership story!

Last Friday,3/28/11,I took my wife CRD to dealer to have the torque converter replaced,for the 2nd time.I drove up there +it didn't act up till I got on the lot.Went in+told the service writer who I was(had an appt.already)+what was the problem.I also said it throws an occasional CEL.He says ok,but it will probably be Monday before they can look at it.Fine,I say,no problem.I get a call Monday afternoon from the writer,At Jeff Wyler CJD in Batavia,Ohio,to call him.He proceeds to tell me the EGR is bad,needs replaced+the fuel head is cracked +leaking fuel.I asked about the torque converter+he says these HAVE to be fixed before they will look at the torque converter,for about $900.00!The CRD has 66k on it+7/70 warranty.No, he says,they are not covered.Ok I say,Just fix the converter.No,he says,You HAVE to pay to fix these FIRST!Then we'll look at the converter.I tell him no way+I'll be up to pick it up.
I get there to pick it up+figure I'll check under the hood.The airbox cover is off+the engine cover is missing.He has to call the mechanic at home who says"It's sitting on top my toolbox,I forgot".I put those back on +start it up to leave.It starts shaking,smoking+shuddering!I go+get the the service manager,Dave King,to show him this.I tell him it wasn't doing this when it came in.He says well you must have brought it in for something!I tell him what it was doing before(converter shuddering,but engine ran fine)+he says that sounds like the torque converter!I tell him thats right.He looks at the paperwork+says I have to fix this before they will look at the converter,$900.00.I can't get him to understand that the engine ran fine before,just had the converter shudder.He just walks away.Had to have it towed home,as it wouldn't make it off the lot.THANK YOU,Jeff Wyler CJD service!! :dead:

Wow, If I were you I'd talk to whoever owns that dealership and if they can't resolve this to your satisfaction, you may need to file a complaint with Daimler Chrysler Customer Service, local Better Business Bureau, depending on what state your in, Dept. of Automotive Repair, and talk to an attorney. This is total B.S. and not right. These people need to either do what's right to your satisfaction or be put out of business, and I'd tell them if they value your business and their reputation, they need to fix the torque converter. Internet is a great source to post lot's of stuff about how they're trying to screw you.

The mechanic gets the ticket to repair your Jeep. It won't run right for him fuel problem and keeps flashing EGR code at him. There is no way he can road test your vehicle until these are fixed for he can not verify that the torque converter is bad or if a new one will fix it. It would be best you get the fuel and EGR problem fixed before taking it back to them. I have to agree with the dealership on this one.

You might try cleaning the EGR using the writeup posted here a few weeks ago. A new fuel filter head is probably less than $120 online.

You mentioned upfront that your vehicle "(SIC) threw an occasional CEL." Do you know what the CEL(s) was/were for? Could it be that your Liberty was trying to tell you something early on, that you chose to ignore?
It is reasonable to ask those questions before you get too incensed at the dealer.

If something, anything, is cracked, it isn't long before the "crack" becomes a major problem, especially in that case of a pressurized system. To make matters even worse, it is a well-known "fact" that our fuel systems are prone to air in the lines, cracked fuel heads, and the like.

Some things stand out to me, warranty-wise, 1) - is the EGR. I am not sure, but I think pollution-related devices have a Federally-mandated warranty period. I just do not know how long that warranty is for. That notwithstanding, if there are codes from prior CEL's perhaps they have dates attached to them. I'll defer to all of you guys who know about such things.
2) - The other would be the cracked fuel head. I don't have an Extended Warranty on my vehicle, but is there a specific exemption for that device? If so, ask the Service guys to show it to you. It is not unreasonable for you to believe that you have coverage.

Often times, when cooler heads prevail, a compromise can be reached. I just experienced this, with Chrysler, a few months ago. They were very, very fair with me.

As for the Service Manager "walking away," how heated did your "discussion" get?

Listen to the wisdom in this forum and take a deep breath. You may still have a case, but there are a bunch of mitigating circumstances that you have already let us know about.

How many more are there?

Air in fuel can seem like a transmission failure, the RPMs go up, tranny feels like it is slipping, and the vehicle does all kind of erratic things. Unless you can fix these things your self, you are at the mercy of your dealer. I hope you don't have to swallow your pride and bring it back to them?

Other than the torque converter shudder it had before it ran great!I know it's the torque converter as the same thing is happening now that happened before they replaced it the FIRST time,at 24 k!The cel it was showing was very intermittent+ it never caused any drivability problems+it would not show up on my scanner afterwards.I think some of you failed to read that,other than the torque converter shuddering,the Jeep ran fine.Now,after they "checked"it out,it barely runs at all!Also, no,the discussion never turned"heated".Granted,I was not thrilled with them,But I was even tempered.The federally mandated emission warranty is only for 2yr/24k miles,other than the catalytic converter+the pcm,which I think are 8yr/100k.Yes,Snowy,these are all the"mitigating"circumstances.

My fuel head started leaking at 25K when I still had warranty, the dealer replaced it for free. I put in the lift pump and it ran much better, no fuel head problems since at just under 72K.
The EGR in your part of the Country is totally useless and hurts your engine. In fact, the Corn in Ohio puts out ~7 times more NOX than all mobile transportation.
If you want to read more, Google "Acid Head Hippies", Google will take you to the links where the EGR and other Environmental issues are discussed in passionate detail. Lets just say the EGR is more Wacko Political Agenda than Environmental Management.
ORM shuts off the EGR as does SEGR, GDE tune cuts the EGR way back.
Danoid is who I think posted how to clean up an EGR valve. Of course you want to clean it up so you can shut it off or cut it way back.
When you chose the EGR fix, you can loosen up two of the bolts that hold the pipe onto the EGR, slide a thin plate in between the flanges, and retighten up the bolts. I have not had time to design one yet and post drawings.
