When I do mine, I plan on using a paint pen to paint marks on the belt and cogs. I will then copiy those marks to the new belt, if all lines back up I should be good to go. |

I have a tip for you that I came up with when I finished mine - when you are turning the crank to get 90 degrees after tdc, if you open the oil filler cap you can see the alignment hole on the intake camshaft coming into position (the alignment hole will be pointing straight up at 90 degrees before tdc) as you are turning the crankshaft. If you don't see it, turn the crank 360 degrees. It's real hard to see in the alignment hole to determine which stroke the crank is on. Good luck - the hardest part for me was removing the fan and shroud (and putting it back in). |

I just did the job a month ago. Bought my CRD at 106k not knowing if the job had been done. Well, it had been, but it was good experience and piece of mind doing it myself. The hardest part for me was getting the new access. belt on (i'm short). My only advice would be def double check the I.P. timing marks. I thought I had it lined up, turned it 720, and had to do it again cuz it was not. Have Fun! |

I did my Serp belt a little bit ago, and if these statements are true I've already experience the hard parts  Good luck Painemann, let us know if you get to it today. |

Looks like I will be doing my timing belt 1,500 miles early. The serpentine belt tensioner is coming apart and was grinding against the back side of the power steering pump pulley. Since it's going to be down for more than a week for that part to come in I might as well get the timing belt done. Don't ask what the tensioner cost.

Oh and I still haven't done the belt job yet, but the garage is warming up now... hope I can finally get it done today! |

On the cooling fan support pully you got two small hole to insert adapter pins (8346) using the spanner Wrench (6958)  You can fabricate a similar tool using 1/8 steel bar and bolts+nuts, no need to bend the bar just strait bar and you adjust to be vertical blocking the pully, ask someone to help you and apply conterclockwise pressure on your crescent wrench to unscreew the fan. PS: I use a hammer and hit my crescent wrench to finally release the da... fan |

The bottom of the condenser was very oily, any idea why? |

If you stuck a socket through that hole onto the bolt head the pulley won't turn. Then you can wrench the fan off. The other tool shown does work but is a pain to get in the holes and hold it there. |

Considering how much abuse I had to put to that fan nut... I would NOT want to trust that much force against the SIDE of an aluminum bolt backed half way out of the hole. I can EASILY see that bolt being bent sideways... Then you are screwed for getting it in or out of there. Frankly, I ended up using a giant screwdriver bashed into those holes, to the point where I actually ripped the handle off the screwdriver trying to get it out of the hole after. This thing is just a crap designed connection. Whats wrong with screwing it onto the pulley, but having a small hole THROUGH the center of the big nut and pulley for a cotter pin? That would prevent the fan from ever unscrewing itself... And removal would be a LOT easier. Its called design. This engine was OBVIOUSLY designed on computer, by people who have never EVER touched a wrench. Honestly, I think it needs to be a requirement at any engineering / design program school: In order to get a degree designing something, you must first work for 1 school year in the maintenance version of your field. Car design = mechanic. That is the only way the design of vehicles will EVER get to a point of being serviceable, rather than disposable. |
