Ok, this might help anyone digging into their own belt job too, but I've found an interesting question on mine right now.

The pictures from GDE's guide are GREAT, but on the flywheel, it looks like there are 2 round holes in the picture, only one of which has the pin in it?

Helpfully, someone drilled a sight hole in the aluminum housing that lets me see the VM tool stuck into the flywheel. I think this is on the correct hole, b/c it completely fills the hole (so not in the huge spaces shown in the pics) and the bolt holes on the front of the crankshaft are vertical. Does this sound right?

The reason I'm looking for clarification is that I discovered that the cam timing on the exhaust was 1 tooth early, and the painted mark on the crank (don't know who painted it) is like 2 teeth passenger-side-of-tdc, while the pin is now in the flywheel. I figure I can't trust the paint at all, but it would help to validate the flywheel hole: that only one ever locks in like that, at the correct spot. The engine has NOT been rotated without the belt on, so it isn't 180 out.

Dude... You have no idea. The mental side of this timing job isn't so bad, figuring out what wasn't done right when my engine was installed b/c the mechanic didn't bother to USE the FSM that I gave him... That is what is making life "interesting" for me.

I have managed to validate the timing settings between the camshafts and the crankshaft / flywheel pins - Look to the "Engine - Valve Timing - Standard Procedure" section of the FSM on page 9-242 that shows the factory marking on the crankshaft. Where my problems and confusion began was the paint marking that the mechanic obviously put on the crankshaft. I had brought that marking to TDC (not noticing the factory mark) and the marks on the camshafts were also TDC... And the intake camshaft pin dropped right in. The exhaust... Didn't. It took a bit to identify that it was a tooth early (clockwise) of where it should have been so the pin would lock in. Once I discovered that, is when I started re-verifying everything. I can't tell if the crankshaft had been mis-timed before... But it won't be this time!
