Yesterday I noticed a rattle noise and found the serpentine belt tensioner was coming apart. It was bad enough that it was grinding the back of the power steering pump pulley. The belt was also rubbing the inside edge of the tensioner. I went to use the tensioner tool to remove the belt found that with a grove worn into the tensioner to the power steering pump pulley would not allow me to loosen the belt. I end up removing the fan and radiator shod and removed the power steering pump pulley (3 bolts ) to get the belt off. Then I removed the pulley center bolt expecting it to be loose and damaged, it wasn't. What happen was the press in bearing had slid more than a 1/4 inch causing the problem. It only took a few turns in the bench vice to slide the bearing in place and surely will fail again. I sure hope the new one has a tighter press fit on the bearing because I hate to have to change it again for it is robbery of what one cost. It's going to take a week to get it so in the meantime I will be doing the timing belt at 98,500 miles. |

If you can get the bearing out and get to the race (surface that the bearing press' into) you can center punch about 6 places equally spaced thus raising the metal where you center punch. Then press a new bearing back in. If done right, it should stay put real well. |

You could also try the green bearing loctite. |

Wasn't it determined some time ago the ideler was a carbon copy of one that VW used  OK here's what I was able to find. Just the roller for the tensioner is the same as the ideler. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49766&hilit=Serpentine+idler+vw If I had the roller in hand I would head to my local VW aftemarket parts place

It's not the roller bearing that went bad but the bearing where the spring is coming out of the split housing. That center bolt held the bearing to the back half fine but not the front half. I thought about loctite but felt it's best to get a new with the vibration of the diesel. |
