Post subject:  Block heater cord plugged or hard wired?

While changing the fuel filter yesterday I finally spied the block heater cord running to the back of the engine down to the driver's side frame. The wall plug was stuck in a hole in the frame, and is dirty like no one's business.

I'd like to remove the cord for cleaning, at least get the crud off of it. Does it detach from the engine or is it hard wired?

Thanks,
Loyd

I forget all the details but the short version is it attaches to the engine down on the bottom, just follow the cord to where. It's relatively easy to remove although I have a vague memory of some minor component being in the way that needs to be moved to ease the access. The cord is so tightly coiled and located in a relatively hot area that the outside rubber sheath is often cracking (not the inside actual wire insulation); mine was but stoutdog's was not. A replacement cord is like $20-25 from a Jeep dealer. After replacing mine I used wire ties to attach it to the wiring harness and located the plug just behind the radiator cross member on the driver's side infront of the Power Distribution Center that holds relays and fuses. That way it's away from heat and easily accessible.

Yea its plugged in. I actually used one off a GM when i needed to replace mine so i think its kind of a universal plug.
