Long story short i broke my arm at work so i have been unable to do my own servicing on my vehicles. So i take my crd to westport auto in westport illinois and they charged me 197.67 for a oil change and fuel filter change. i really thought that was very unreasonable so i told them. of course they tried to back up there price and i got mad. well to shortin it up i was told not to come back for any servicing. what do you guys thank

While it does seem high, the real question is, did they give you a written estimate beforehand and did you acknowledge it with a signature before they went ahead and did the work?

If so, you're probably SOL. If not, they have clearly skirted standard practice and quite probably, the law. Check your local/state regulations.

I don't remember the last time I took my vehicle in for service, anywhere, where the shop failed to provide me with a written estimate beforehand.

Oil is expensive, oil filter plus .4 hrs is what our dealership charges for lube rack services. I have no idea what a MOPAR filter costs retail but AllData says the filter pays .3 hrs. I'm not sure what a shop retail hour is there, but in these parts is $125. So if you went to a Jeep Dealer in SLC your labor charge would be $75 plust the price of expensive oil, oil filter and fuel filter... seems pretty standard to me.

Lube, oil and filter at my regular local repair place, not dealer, runs just under $80 and includes rotate, check brakes, and look at CV joints and such while on lift. Not a bad price since Mobil 1 runs about $50 for 6qts even through Amazon. I will admit to being a long time regular customer so I'm getting some of this at a serious discount as I buy tires there too. That said just a oil drain and fill with a filter at the dealer shouldn't be much more than that. The fuel filter NAPA cost is about $25 for a WIX and I'd assume a dealer markup of about double plus they probably hit you for 1/2 hour labor at $80+ per hour plus $5-10 for shop "supplies" and "disposal" fees. So $80+50+40+10=$180 so the $197 you got hit with is not too surprising but you should have been told the cost up front. Rather horrible though for a DIY project cost on the order of 1/2 that and 30 minutes or so of your time, not counting dropping off the used oil at an appropriate location.

I know it shocks the socks off me but then the days of $25 for a decent alternator and $35 for a really good one at your local parts store have gone the way of gas for $0.159 in a price war or $0.259 with no war and diesel for $0.189 all the time. I hate to say it but some of us older farts have trouble dealing with the change from the days where putting in $1.00 US worth of fuel was like 1/4-1/2 a tank depending on what you drove. Putting it another way back then my fuel cost was less than $0.01 per mile. Oh well.

When I get home I'll write it up. I'm just not used to that as I have always done them myself

O'Reilly has Mobil 1 0W-40 for $4.99 a quart. Not sure if the sale includes Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 at that price. The Wix oil filter was $5.99.

Some consolation when feeling screwed by a business is to leave a review for it on the net. The review will show up when Google Map is used by someone searching for a Jeep dealer in your area. Of course, if I get exceptionally good service, I also leave a review.

Doing it yourself and taking it to a dealer is like comparing apples to oranges. At a dealer they have to cover big overhead so the part going to be much more and the labor about $100 per hour for a minimum of one hour. If you had it done it here in the Northwest you would of paid more.
