I live in Eugene, Or. and just purchased a used CRD that needs its Timing belt changed. A local diesel shop politely refused, saying they are not familiar enough. Anyone have info on a good place to have work done on CRD, Eugene area would be preferred but I'd drive to Salem or Portland if could find a qualified, experienced mechanic. Dave |

I would do it for you but I'm at Camano Island, WA. A little too far for you to drive. BTW: welcome to the forum. |

Thanks Wobbly, that was a great lead and may be best option. Blackliberty- if nothing else around town or closer by works, I am not opposed to bringing CRD to Seattle area for knowledgeable experiened work. I have many friends up in that area I should come and visit anyway. Thanks, Dave |

The first step might be to find a competent diesel mechanic with VW TDi or MB CRD experience who is not afraid to work on the VM engine. Then tell him/her that you will provide the special tools for the timing belt job along with the FSM instructions. Then purchase the special tools for the CRD, perhaps a used set on EBAY, or from a list member, or arrange to rent them. After the job is complete, sell or return the special tools. When the BMW 524TD engine in my Vixen came unglued south of Eugene, I called all the independent BMW and VW shops there, and also some diesel shops that worked on RV diesels. None of them would work on it. I ended up having the RV towed to my house in Portland where I did an engine transplant myself. |

NW Jeep Chrysler Dodge in Beaverton, OR. I bought 2 jeeps from them the CRD being the last, they have fixed every issue I have had and most of them they just took care of due to TSB. I have had a lot of work done but I also bought the extended warranty and its paid for its self 2-3 times over. The have dodge cummins and printer guys who actually know what a diesel engine is and how it should ideally operate. Check them out, I have never had that "need to strangle" feeling after leaving the service desk. Chee |

When I bought some parts at Richard's [The real name is a shortened form of Richard which the forum software finds offensive] Jeep in Hillsboro, the service bays were empty. The three Service Writers were staring into their computers. Instead of mini-offices, the reps each had only had a very small round high table with a stool. They were planted in a row in the middle of the customer lounge. Evidently Richard [D*ck] didn't want them playing video games when they didn't have any customers. |

Justin Grow, who is in Portland, just did my CRD timing belt. He's an expert on TDI engines. After he changed our Jetta's timing belt about a month ago, I asked if he'd consider changing the Jeep's belt, which was also due for maintenance. Justin read the Jeep shop manual and forum posts by guys who'd done the job and agreed to take it on. He finished the job yesterday and I'm delighted. Justin now has the special Jeep tools, service manual, and experience to do CRD timing belts, so don't hesitate to e-mail him about your CRD: justgrow@gmail.com |
