LOST JEEPS :: View topic - wider rims for a CRD

TJ Rubicons shipped with 16x8 wheels 5" backspacing and 245x75 tires. Very popular upgrade for KJ's. Stock KJ wheels are 16x7 with 5" backspacking so you gain an inch in width

Most of the tire fitting guides I've seen indicate the 16x8 rim is too wide for 245x75, but they shipped from the factory that way.

The rule of thumb I use:

Keep the tread width of the tire about 1/2" wider than the width of the wheel it's on.

This will be the most stable and wear the best. For our 16x7 wheels...this is usually a 235 or 245 series tire. For a 16x8, this will be a 255 series tire.

I'm running 265s on the 16x7s right now, and it's pretty "wallowy" on the highway. I'm going to go back to 245s this weekend, as bad as I hate it.

Really? An 11" wide tire on a 7" wide wheel, and that's what they recommended?? Odd...

Well I'm not liking this combo nearly as much as I thought I would. It's very squirmish under the Jeep and when I turn full lock the tires bulge to the point you think they might roll up under the bead and that's with 40 PSI in them. So I'm going back to something a little more narrow for these wheels.

Funny this thread popped up.. I just bought 16x8 Black rocks and 235/70s (hankook) I realized the rim looks very wide but other places i read say that it will actually work fine.. Am i gonna have a problem with this setup?

I was wondering if any of the Jeep vehicles make a wider rim for the CRD and maintains the proper backspacing. I don't want a fancy aftermarket wheel, just would like to stick with something that resides on a Jeep that will allow a little wider track for a 245 series tire.

I have 245's on the stock Wheels......so do many others here. Some folks like the get the Moab wheels from the Wrangler Rubicon. you can often find them on bolderbars.com or craigslist from people that changed out for aftermarket.

In my opinion, the factory 7" wheels are almost too WIDE for a 245 tire. The tread width is barely as wide as the wheel as it is...why would you want to go with a wider wheel? That would look goofy and wear your tires poorly.

Yes, they did. And Jeep learned from their mistake. Which is why now, they ship with 255s.

My bad, I had thought that the CRD had narrower rims and by going to an eight inch rim I would get a little bit of stability. I've gotten a little sideways blowing the gook out of the turbo and was looking to compensate for going to a little taller tire and a small lift.

So I'm going back to something a little more narrow for these wheels. Yep,molded into the sidwall was stamped "on mount on 16x7 rim".Those tires were Interco's Trxus MT's. Air pressure plays alot in this combo as most 265/75R16's are load range D so higher then stock psi's are required,I ran 43psi for best wear and ride.The narrow rim and wide tire(to a point) is better offroad also,allows you to air down much farther without the risk of blowing a bead.

Funny this thread popped up.. I just bought 16x8 Black rocks and 235/70s (hankook) I realized the rim looks very wide but other places i read say that it will actually work fine.. Am i gonna have a problem with this setup?
