![]() I pulled the cover off last night and saw quite a bit of oil around this thing pictured. Not even sure what it is. |

CCV, Crankcase Vent. Check the noob guide for more information on EHM. Looks like yours need to be removed and cleaned out badly. |

Oh... is that what that is? I'm not going to do an EHM though... I'll either ignore it or clean it up (selling it this summer). |

Or, Just replace it. I think it cost me under $40 from the dealer, no less. Took all of 5 minutes to install. |

If you have lots of oil there it's best to check your airbox to turbo, turbo to intercooler, and intercooler engine hoses for rot/splits caused by excessive oil. Airbox hose is a dealer item costing on the order os $60. The others can be an OEM 2n generation replacement, at least as I understand it the turbo to intercooler OEM replacement is lined. But for not much more $s most/many prefer silicone Samcos which can be obtained from http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=328 Check out the discussion at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=51797 |

I would absolutely check your airbox-to-turbo hose, asap. The CCV dumps into that hose at a little elbow in a depression near the bottom, allowing oil to settle there and slowly soak through. When I replaced my tstat about a month ago, I discovered that hose hanging by one small sliver of otherwise thoroughly disolved plastic. Could've been a $$$$ fix, had I not caught it. Don't just feel around. I'd recommend going to the trouble of actually removing the hose and inspecting it. I didn't notice the corrosion until I did that myself. |

Ran fine for 100K+ miles without 'em. I wouldn't have known this was going on unless I pulled the cover... should be fine 'till summer either way so |

I don't remember if I took the cover off or not... if I did, the timing belt is in front of the motor so I wouldn't of seen it anyway. Are you saying that I actually knew there was a problem since February and waited until now to ask about it? Come on now. |

I brought 'er into the shop, took the dealio off and cleaned it out. All the hoses look the same as they've have since 2007 (I did replace the CAC hose in 2008). I put it back on, cleaned off all the oil that was on the engine and everything seems to run the way it always had so... I dunno. I'll check is again in a while... oil stains tend to scare away potential buyers |

It's not defective, it just passes so much oil that it seeps through the hoses and gets all over. It's not much of a separator, by design it seems. Just clean it up and check the tube that goes from the air filter box to the turbo inlet. It might be soft or rotted through, especially at the bottom where you can't see or really reach. If it's rotted through the turbo will be sucking in unfiltered air all the time. |

I don't blame him. I have such a love hate relationship with mine too. Sure, great fuel mileage on long trips, but when I add up the repair costs each year it kind of negates all the money saved on mpg. |

Could the source for all this oil staining be too much oil in the crankcase? |

DynoPax wrote: Could the source for all this oil staining be too much oil in the crankcase? Good point, everytime I fill my CRD to the max oil limit it always ends up going back down near the low limit. Seems to hold there and I see no leaks. I recall reading that the CRD should never be filled to the max as it will just spew out the excess oil. |

Correct the consensus seems to be a full fill is 6.3 qts with Wix 51516 or 7 qts with the oversize Wix 51515 which if I recall correctly forum members say is about midway between the full and add mark on the dipstick, haven't done this yet so I cannot be positive. |
