What is the difference between the two as it pertains to wheeling... Does the suncoast have any advantage over the Euro TC, IE lower lock up so I get better power at lower RPM? I plan on using GDE TCM tune, which if I remember gives better performace when in 4LO (like being able to idle over a standard curb) ***This is not a general debate between the two TC, that has been covered before*** |

The TCM tune changes the lock up and shift points. |

Suncoast is a stronger torque converter, they have made even more upgrades to keep inline with what they are doing for the High Performance 68RFE Competition transmissions they are building for the 800HP plus Dodge Cummins trucks. Translated into simple English, the latest CRD Suncoast Torque Converters are made to handle ~400HP. Does any one have a tune that cranks out that much? I don't think so. GDE knows all the specs on the Euro and has published them, so look for their posts. I did hear a few saying that all the Mopar Euro converters are remans and not new. Some people have personal issues with reman stuff. |

Warp, I've seen you mention suncoast has more mass so it dampens more, but does a bigger TC have any pros or cons at low speed? |

Any rotating increase of mass (bulk weight) will smooth out torsional vibrations in the engine and drive line. The farther the mass is from the center line of the crank, the more you get for the amount of weight. Since the torque converter is the largest diameter, you get the most benefit for the amount of weight you add. Translated into simple English, a converter like a Suncoast with a billet front cover and larger guts makes more sense. In theory, you will get a little more inertia to help you crawl over the initial approach of a rock with a heavier converter than with a lighter converter. The only thing you will gain with a lighter converter is watching the tachometer needle go up under no load with the trans in park or neutral. Professor Halliburton will argue that using depleted uranium balancer weights is better than a billet front cover and sight the hear say opinions of his army of PEs, let me laugh in advance Having installed the Suncoast/Transgo before putting in the InMotion Stage II tune, I can testify that the CRD shifts and runs better after the tune. The shifting improvement is due to our Smart TCM that learns the correct line pressures and shifting firmness needed. When it comes to better TCM tunes, the best is what the Dodge Cummins is geting with the hotter TCM tunes. Due to the CRD being the Love Child of Chrysler instead of the full blooded Child like the Ram, we can only hope for some of what the Spoiled kid of the Family gets. We can only hope the TCM tuners adopt some of the tricks being learned by the Dodge Cummins Performance TCM tunes will come our way. With out mentioning any vendor names, lets hope Dave & Kieth read the Tea Leaves and throw us a bone. |

Well I decided to go with the EURO because the GDE Trans tune was designed using the EURO TC. $350 plus 100 core, it came today and looks nice. |

http://www.suncoastconverters.com/ Ron Wolverton is the Guru and one of the principal owners. You won't find and jars full of beans with ISO 900X serial numbers on each bean sitting in the place. There won't be anyone counting them either

Quote: cost? About 750~ MSRP but a trans shop might be able to cut it down if you let them install it.. |

Warp - I would like to point out that depleted uranium makes for great 30mm holes in combat armor. |

well, I ordered mine from moparonlineparts.com, initially cheaper than moparpartsamerica, BUT they then tacked on the 100 core, I never placed an order elsewhere. It comes in a handy dandy new Mopar Box though! |

I'm aware that UT isn't known for offroad like other states but I do a fair amount of wheeling in a place called MOAB and I've never needed a tune or a euro part to idle over most things (including a curb). I do acknowledge that it's in the spirit of LOST (specifically CRD forum) to dramatically over-think things however. |

Well I really like curbs, what can I say, thanks for the input as always. |

Some us get paid to solve problems and that is where we get our income from. The mods I have done on my CRD and other things I have owned have inspired solutions at work and made things better for me (like pay raises), my employer and our customers. Lots less boring than doing a task that can be replaced by automation. But if you enjoy doing what an automated piece of equipment can do, knock your self out. |

Translated into simple English, a converter like a Suncoast with a billet front cover and larger guts makes more sense. Warp, when I called Suncoast the other day, the gentleman I talked to said that they don't put a billet cover on the torque converters for the CRD. That left me shocked and leaning towards a Euro TC. Are you sure they use a billet cover? I figure I'd ask you since you bought one. Thanks. |
