I've been on the forum for a little while now and it's been extremely helpful. The 05 Limited that my wife and I picked up recently has already had some of the common issues - air in the fuel lines, t-stat gone bad, etc. But luckily, with the help of Lost Jeeps, been able to identify and / or correct as needed.

I have found that there has been some sort of electrical mod put on the trans. I'm guessing that it could be to turn the fan on if the trans temp goes up, but I'm not sure about that. Anyone able to shed some light on that with the pictures below?

On the transmission

I also noticed some seepage down by the oil pan/trans area. Anything to worry about? I don't notice any drips under the Jeep in the garage, but it seems it's in a bit of a weird place - where the trans connects up.

Thanks for any insight....

The oil may be a rear main seal leak, but more likely is seeping from all the way up at the turbo inlet, where crankcase oil fumes condense and weep through the turbo inlet hose.

Looking at those wires it almost looks like someone ran them to replace a damaged circuit leading to whatever that is on the transmission.

This seems like a good possibility to me too.

My CRD had some non factory wiring going from the cam shaft position sensor to the PCM... turned out to be just a repair. I would look at the wiring diagrams to figure out what pins on the TCM they are going to.

Thanks guys, I just pulled the boost hoses off last night to check them, hopefully I got the connection to the turbo inlet on plenty tight and maybe it won't leak.

I will look a bit more closely at the turbo inlet connection. Rear main seal leak had crossed my mind, but I really don't want that.... :-)

CATCRD, I had thought about doing a turbo timer. Any tips on installation? The last one I put in was on a turbo MR2 and you could buy a specific harness. I doubt there is such a thing for the Jeep.

I'll dig into the service manual and see if I can find pin outs.

Thanks again.

I have the same problem and another member had it as well. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=48686

If you have oil on your starter, it is leaking from a metal tube coming off your EGR where it meets the block. It will eventually drip on the ground....ask me how I know.

Over the years the rear main seals on the CRD's have given problems with seepage expecialy if the oil is over filled to the MAX on the dip stick. Some members, again years ago, had several replaced under warranty and they still leaked. Mine only seeps if the oil level is at the MAX mark on the stick :banghead:

I had oil like that on the area between the trans and engine adapter plate. When I replaced my Torque converter, the rear seal was dry. Oil was coming down from above where the Bean Counter Engineered oil separator puck was leaking a little due to a slight bind from the hose I ran to my custom fab (Home Shop Made) oil separator.
Since oil runs down, I agree with the other posts to check on top first, fix, clean off and verify the problem has gone away.

That is a factory sensor on the transmission it controls the shift firmness. When you install a shift kit it comes with a resistor that is suppose to hook the two wires together but it shifts to hard in the libertys so most remove them after trying them of course.

Good stuff guys. I know what I'll be doing Saturday. I've been wanting to do some upgrades, but it seems it's been fixing stuff so far. So far only the only upgrade has been radio and the sat radio periodically decides to wigout.

Hopefully, once the bugs are out, I can proceed with upgrades. GDE tune and skids first up.

Thanks much for the pointers!

As a follow up to the oil mess, I pulled the turbo inlet hose off again today. I looked much more closely from underneath and above and I'm about 90% sure that the oily mess is coming from the connection at the turbo inlet. I cleaned everything up pretty thoroghly and will be ordering a set of Samcos this weekend.

I still want to check into the TCM pinouts, but I bet you guys are correct in that it is a repair.

Thanks!
