05 CRD Gear ??

I'm a noob to the crd's. I just recently bought one and have done everything in the noob guide. I havn't experienced tc shudder, but i'm thinking of putting the euro tc in just for pre-caution and I am going with the GDE hot tune. My main concern for my crd is mileage. I pull a 5x10 cargo trailer daily. Yukon makes a 3.55 ring and pinion set. I was wondering if this will help in mileage and also if I would have enough power and torque to still tow comfortably.

There is a lot of chat on the forum about towing, best tunes, and torque converters. I'd suggest you contact Keith at GDE for advice on which level of stock or custom tune and possible TCM tune based on the actual typical weight (not size) of your trailer, towing speeds, and terrain. I don't tow much but when I do it's in flat terrain and about 2,500 lbs of boat/motor/trailer/gear so I'm not touching my stock TC until I have to. As to the regearing I cannot offer an opinion other than to observe lots of folks tow heavy gear without touching the rear end. See for example viewtopic.php?f=5&t=60453

Howdy welcome to LOST

1) the 3.55 won't help unless you run highway lightly loaded, and odds are you'd need a GDE tranny tune to keep it in 5th gear.
2) depending on how heavy the 5x10 is, and how many hills you have to deal with - you might consider 4.10's
3) gear changes also require the front to be changed - and those gearsets are Jeep only - the pinion is longer than a steel D30.

The keep with any gearing is to try and keep the engine close to the torque peak (1800 rpm)

My terrain is flat. Central illinois. My trips are to and from indianapolis indiana on the interstate. I would prolly guess my trailer at most loaded weighs 2500lbs

Well - with the 3.70's several folks have pulled over the 5000 lb limit.
so the 3.55 might be reasonable - ask Keith.
I'm sure the tranny tune will help.
try just running it as is for a while and see what rpm you're at while cruising and if the tranny has to downshift
- if you can get a tranny temp gauge on there it would help - 3.55's will require the TC to slip more starting off - so it might get hot

alright. thanks for the input. I will say that I really do like this thing so far. It sure beats the trailblazer I had, as far as mileage and power.

The CRD has peak torque at 1,800 RPM. For that reason alone, 3.55s would increase your interstate mileage. I have comtemplated this myself.

Having said that... when you put a trailer on the back it's a different ballgame. I'm not sure how this would affect things since I haven't tried it...but I would assume that you'd still be OK. 3.73 to 3.55 isn't that much difference.

The regear would cost more than the fuel you would save if you pay for parts and labor. If you find some complete 3.55 axles from a KJ that came with them and install yourself, it might end up saving you money in the long run.
