(I actually found the bearing for $10 on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/A-C-COMP ... 0422677966 )

The EBAY listing says this bearing fits DENSO 10PA15C and is 35x52x22. The correct size for that compressor clutch is 30x52x22 per this catalog: http://www.nrf.eu/uploads/files/ac_cata ... s_2010.pdf

Seems like one or the other is wrong.

I sent the seller a note about that, I honestly had not noticed it.

The NRF catalog has a coil that is exactly the right dimensions - part number 38447. Now we just need to figure out how to order from them...

A/C clutch bearing failure may be caused by lack of lubrication due to an overheating compressor.
The grease melts and leaks out of the bearing. It would be interesting to know the temperature of the clutch bearing in a normally operating viscous heater. Perhaps a viscous heater clutch should have a bearing rated for a higher temperature than for a/c compressor service. Not sure that there are such bearings of suitable dimensions, though.

Here's a good explanation of why magnetic clutches fail: http://www.acmetruckbrake.com/docs/usef ... RESSOR.pdf

Good info.

Makes me wonder if it failed now that it is getting warm because it was stuck on.

The VH shaft does turn freely enough, and the quick inspection inside showed no signs of trauma- some good stuff to think about.

If the clutch failed and the unit was stuck on, that most likely lead to the failure. The VH automatically turns off when engine is above 2400rpm. Extended operation above this rpm will exceed the bearing limits. Hopefully this will not be a common high mile or extended service life failure mode. A low cost replacement bearing would be very nice!

have not had any issue with this part, but by reading the posts I can tell you will be able to find a matching denso clutch bearing/housing where ever they work rebuilding AC compressors on you town, you might want to try that.

The bearing arrived today!!

I cleaned up the staking and pressed it in. Used an aluminum spacer I had lying around to support the face. Used the old bearing outer race to press the new bearing in. It was a very tight fit; so much so that I started to question my measurements.... but after a little maneuvering it dropped right in!

I now have a freely rotating pulley that will function!! :pepper:

I've assembled the pulley back onto the VH without the coil for now. The good folks at polarbearinc.com have offered to help me match up a clutch. I've sent them a ton of pictures with the measurements and any numbers that I've found. Let's wish them luck.

When I put the clutch face back on it did not have the clearance necessary to disengage!! This liberty may have been running for its entire life with the VH engaged! I added a washer to make sure it couldn't drag for this temporary (I hope) installation.

Just thought I'd post an update while I'm waiting for my wife to drive me back to the Jeep so I can put this sucker on and have wheels again!

Well, it is back on the road!

$15 for bearing with expedited shipping
$36 for a new Gates belt from RA.

Will run fine like this until winter; so the search for a coil is not urgent.

BTW did we ever find out if this bearing is 35x52x22 or 30x52x22?

Verified 35mm ID X 52mm OD x 22mm.

Good job then.

Slight branch:
Now if only someone who has a temp gun could measure line-in, line-out temperature difference (say, 30 seconds of starting the truck), we can figure out a way to test these things.

I mean sure we can see it spin but are the plates still heating?

The clutch clearance for an a/c compressor is specified by the manufacturer and is set by selecting the correct shim combination from a shim pack. When you disassembled the heater were there any shims?

There was one thin shim. Didn't measure it. When I put it back together I did not have sufficient clearance, so I put a small washer I found in the shop in as a temporary measure until I can find a coil.

Nope.

Still haven't found a coil. We have been driving it, so its not a show stopper.

The VH is of little value unless you need to idle for long periods in very cold weather.
