I just realized that 5 years ago today I bought my CRD. So Happy birthday to my CRD. It's sitting in the garage clean and shinning.
After the newness has worn off and the botched Chrysler engineering problems have been rectified I can now look at my CRD with a clear view :dizzy:
Yesterday I gave it a good cleaning followed by a wax job. As I detailed the body I saw all the areas where attention was paid to wind noise and thought they could have cut corners and left these seals off. Looking at the paint it still shines like new despite 5 years driving. Underneath there's rust on many suspension parts expecially the rear "A" frame (is that what it's called?) that holds the rear axel in place and where the front struts attatch to the steering components. Definetly not the quality of my many past VW's and my 1993 VW Eurovan that despite sitting outside is in better condition underneath rustwise :furious:
But the CRD was made in the US by a previous BIG three so what should I expect :?: In comparision my 2000 Cherokee with 154,000 miles is in much better condition underneath and overall then my 06 CRD with only 41,000 but the XJ shows it's previous owner took immaculte care of it but my CRD has had better then average care taken of it.

So 5 years later would I have bought my CRD again :?: With all the shortcomings, like seats that stain with clear water and the edges breaking down, window channels that make horrable noise when wet rolling them down, major oversights like the torque converter with Chrsler's fantastic F37 fix, air leaks in the fuel I'm not sure if I would or would not buy it again :D  :? Being the buyer of a new Liberty CRD was a love hate relationship  :pepper:

After having the original TC and front pump replaced with Euro TC, original TCM and close to original ECM it does the job I bought it for and that is towing our 3000-3500# camping trailer while getting 18-20 mpg at freeway speeds. The front windows have been totally replaced with new "improved" ones, the broken down edge of the seats are 5 years old and not new anymore and can be overlooked.

The dealer I bought it from, Crown Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge and now Ram has been fantastic and has worked around Chrysler's bean counter mentality and resolved my major issues.

Would I buy another Jeep/Fiat? Doubtfull :5SHOTS: Would I buy from Crown again IF they had what I wanted? Most likely

Happy birthday to your CRD! :D
Thanks for the post. I've been thinking about ways to make mine last longer.
I can't afford to replace it and really don't see anything that would fit the bill if I had the money.

Yeah on the 11th May my 2002 2.5 CRD turned 9!
I have had very few problems with it...about three weeks ago I paid my first visit to the spare counter to buy new CAC Turbo hoses because one had just blown.....major problem to try and get SAMCO hoses here in a hurry so I bought OEM Jeep hoses. :)
I do believe that the 2002 models were assembled with a lot of care...especially the first Export models, as I have had none of the problems posted by owners of the later made KJs. :?
I have had a lot of harness wiring failures...caused I believe by a frontal accident when a tree jumped out in front of my SO..the panel beaters did a fair job but I think the main harness picked up some latent damage in the process. The first wiring problem I had I took to the dealer....the so called Auto Electrician spent a few hours scratching his head so I told them to wrap it up and I took it home. A search on the Interweb turned up a wiring diagram for the 2002 models and my 34 years of Electronics experience came handy in fixing about 6 wiring problems so far :D .
Would I buy another KJ ....you bet I would, I would like an auto box although I am a bit wary of all the later KJ models!

Happy birthday to your workhorse! He did a great job towing the Casita! What can replace it anyway Joe? A use Diesel GC ? A Mercedes Benz ML (320/350) CDI? A BMW X5 diesel? None of them can be find dirt cheap like the CRD. We probably never get another small diesel truck for less then 30K on the US territory.

Better keep it and take care of it because your next chance to get a similar drive train may only be possible if you doing a VM or MB engine swap!

It's just speculation and I wish they are wrong! Time will tell... :ALONE:

Why don't you look at the MDH to see when your Jeep was really born?

It was built January 27, 2006 but it didn't start crying till I bought it May 22, 2006 so that's when it started living :ROTFL:

Well happy B Day to your CRD :JEEPIN: Being the second owner of mine I am not sure when it was first sold.... I might still have the Carfax report thats about the only way I would know. I know mine was built in late November 2005 sometime so I am sure mine is already over 5 years old. I have had few problems I suppose and hope it stays that way. Mine does have a little rust unter it where things have scrapped the frame and things from the little off road I have done and might have been done by the first owner but is very minimal. I try to wash it after the snow is cleared in the winter at the car wash with under blast to get the salt out. I love Eugine and hope to keep him a while, lift him and get a pop up or other small camper some day to tow fun places. I have always been good at taking decent car of my vehicles, changing the oil and stuff regularly keeping it reasonably clean. I think if you keep after any vehicle odds are it will run better, be more dependable and last longer.

Sadly there is nothing I could remotely afford to replace it with another diesel SUV of its size. A BMW x5d would be great but too expensive and god I sure would not take it off the pavement with what those cost same for an MB.

I'm hoping for a Liberty or Wrangler CRD to be for sale here when its time to buy a new Jeep. and that I won't have to move overseas to own and drive it.

I have only had mine less than a year and about 20k miles, I did have the rear windows fall and the Jeep dealer took if for the day and changed all 4 for free! Nice. I converted mine to run on used fryer grease and it has been a great vehicle. Easy to park good pick-up. Good brakes, traction, took it to the mountain house went up hills like nothing--carrying 350lbs of grease hanging off the trailer hitch. I hope the second year is as good as the first year.
