Hi, I was wandering if anyone has ever replace a glowplug with a resistor or something that tricks the ECM in to thinking that is the glow plug. if so what is it? I was thinking on a ballast resistor but I dont even know how many amps the the glow plugs get when in use. Any ideas?

Ok, according to the service manual a single glow plug would take a max of 8 amps depending on ambient temperature. if I hook a 10 amp ballas resistor will it trick the ECM?

How many Ohms is the ballast resistor? I believe the resistance of the glow plug is about 1.5 Ohm...very low...hence why it draws about 8 amps. It is worth a try to use the ballast resistor if the resistance value is similar to the glow plug, bear in mind that there have been a lot of posts about the wiring harness to the glow plugs sometimes being connected the wrong way around...so be sure you are working with the correct glow plug :?

cheked the harness and it is ok, I'll swing by ace electronics tomorrow to see if i can fin a chromnickelsteel type of resistor that might emulate the same resistance as the new metal 5v glowplugs.

Hopefully I am understanding you that you're already running the lower voltage gp controller then just install the new metal GP's and there's your needed resistors!
I know the ECU needs a flash too or the newer controller will be incompatible with the computer(?)....
I know GP replacing can be a PITA however.....

all glowplug system has been update to the 5v, including GCU and ECM, I just want to get arround replacing a plug that is stuck on the engine, I dont want to remove the head. 3 plugs will do the job just fine for me.

Has the plug been broken off or just "stuck" :?: If it's just stuck get some good penetrating oil like Kroil and give it a shot every day for a week then gently try loosening it. If not repeat.
