Hi, I need to take my cylinder head off and I am trying to find out what is the right thickness of the head gasket. I asked my local dealer and they have no idea.
according to the 05 KJ parts fiche there are three sizes
part# Thickness
5072675AB 1.32mm
5072676AB 1.42mm
5072677AB 1.52mm
I understand that the thinner the gasket the higher the compression thus more aggressive performance, but.. what is the trade off? reliability? durability? both? I need to order the gasket and I would like to know first, what is the stock gasket and then if it would be worth changing to a different thickness?

First, we are talking 1/10 of a millimeter so that won't do nothing for extra boost from your engine.

Normally, the stock gasket is the thinnest one, then after you plane the head you fit a slightly thicker one to compensate for the aluminium you shaved of the warped head.

I went with the 1.42mm gasket on my 05 over a year ago. Works fine.
You can ask George from VMSpecialists in the UK for advice.

Which gasket you choose depends on the protrusion of the liner and the piston. Each engine is measured on the assembly line for this tolerance.

Which gasket you need can be determined by looking at the existing part. On the intake side of the gasket there are holes which indicate the thickness, there are up to three holes possible.

It won't change the power of the engine just maintains the proper valve-piston clearance.

Yup, the miller tools include a mounting block and dial indicator to measure the cylinder head protrusion.

There is a portion of the head gasket on the intake side that is exposed. It will have either 0,1, or 2 holes in it.

0 holes = 1.32mm

1 hole = 1.42mm

2 holes = 1.52mm

Yes,
Excellent info. My Jeep dealer didn't even know that. He measured the old gasket at 1.33(obviously compressed) so we went with the 1.42mm.
