| Post subject: | 05 CRD dies when engine warms up??? |
My daughter has a 05 CRD that the engine will die when the engine is warm and then it will take 20 or 30 minutes before it will restart. The only 2 codes were P0725 engine speed sensor and P0102 mass/volume air flow a circuit low input. Is the engine speed sensor the cam position sensor? I have replaced the cam position sensor and cleaned the air flow sensor and neither seemed to help. I am not sure what to do next. Any help would be appreciated. Chris |

Howdy - Welcome to LOST I have no idea about why it dies. You can unplug the Mass air flow sensor on top of the air box and it'll run better except for the P102 CEL (also known as ORM); so I suspect the issue is the P0725. if you don't get a suggestion - try a PM to Keith at Green Diesel Engineering very knowledgeable and helpful. |

Take a look at the P0725 code in the 2006 FSM "e" copy that's available thru Sir Sams NOOB guide. That code is set when the Engine RPM is less than 390 or greater than 8000 for more than 2 seconds while the engine is running and the transmission system defaults to Limp-in mode. Since you say the engine shuts down I suspect this code is being thrown because as the engine dies it's "still running" when RPM drops below 390 and the code may be a red herring. See what happens with the MAF unplugged. |

How long of a warm up are we talking about? And what modifications are done to the liberty? |

In warm weather it will run about 15-20 minutes and then will have to cool for 20-30 before it will restart. Then will die again in about 5 minutes. There have been no modifications done to this Jeep. Thanks, Chris |

I'm also interested in knowing what might help if anyone knows. I have a very similar problem with mine. |

from another jeep forum (not the CRD) SYMPTOM: P0725-ENGINE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT WHEN MONITORED AND SET CONDITION: P0725-ENGINE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT When Monitored: Continuously with engine running. Set Condition: This code is set when the engine speed sensed by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) is less than 400 RPM and the engine is running (As reported by the PCM over the communication bus) for 2 seconds. Fuel filter maybe, though we have never seen a fuel filter failure condition quite like this. Have you read through the noob guide yet? Have you cleaned your MAP? Have you bled the fuel system/purged air? These may have nothing to do with your problem, but would be good to eliminate as problems before continuing. |

The same thing happened to myn cherokee crd 2.8. The crankshaft sensor was replaced, no problem after that. This sensor is located near the bell housing, behind the turbo and heatshield. You can see it, when you look upwards, above the oil filter, near the bend of the exhaust downpipe. henk. |

Also had a crankshaft position sensor. However I changed it and the next day the thing wouldn't start at all. I'll check back when I find the problem. |

Resolution? Probably not going to get an update from a guy with only 3 posts all in the same thread, joined the forum the day he posts the issue..... Thought I'd try though, sure beats walking home from work.....
