Was in Autozone today and they had Shell Rotella 5w40 on clearance for $14.99, both the new style bottle (T6) and the older style blue bottle with just Rotella 5w40

No idea if this is widespread or not but I have 3 years plus of oil now...

The CRD uses 5w40.

Recommended is 0W40 which is on sale at NAPA right now.

Per the manual 0W40 is recommended but 5W40 is acceptable so long as the appropriate diesel specs are met. I checked the local Autozone and not on sale the Shell Rotella is $15.99 per gal.

wow...I mistyped...thanks for the education folks

I have never heard of 4w40, I meant to type 5w-40. The Rotella T6 should have given it away...

I thought $14.99 a gallon on it was a darn good deal.

It is a good deal. Beats wal-mart by about $6.

0w-40 is a poor oil for a turbo charged egr equipped diesel engine. the spec is only for CAFE standards.

Rotella T6 is $19.50 at my local walmart, $24-$26 everyplace else per gallon so if you got it for $15 good for you. I wonder why they are clearencing it out? maybe it don't sell well in your area for them.

I use it myself. It is a fully diesel rated oil, not like that 0w40 stuff. 0w40 is more of an oil for european cars mostly gassers and not easy for me to find. Rotella T6 I can get anyplace but Target. Target's auto department is a waste of time for any thing other than detailing things unless you drive a gasser.

Yeah, the first 50K my CRD was covered with free oil changes so it got 0-40 mobile one at the dealer (once I pointed out that the manual says to use that, they used 15-40 the first couple changes and too much of it, I posted that on here back in 2005-2006. Once the free oil changes disappeared (and after the new and free oil pan on the second last oil change lol )I have been using Rotella 5-40 exclusively, if you look at the testing and ratings it is a much better choice than the mobile 1 0-40, especially with its ability to hold the ash...some of you may have noticed the oil in our crd gets a little dark....

Now the new mobile 5-40 euro spec oil seems to be a good choice as well but not worth it to me the $$ over the Rotella 5-40

If you want a Mobil-1 product then their 5/40 Turbo Diesel Truck oil is the one to get. It's about $24 a gallon at Wal-Mart. If money were no object I would use it but I'm retired now and change my oil twice a year and that works out to about 3k miles each change on the CRD
I've used Shell Rotella for about a million miles on VW diesels over the years. First their 15/40 then in 1996 on my 96 Passatt TDI station wagon I switched to 5/40 and never had an engine failure and a couple of the VW's were over 200k when I bought them :ROTFL:

I think it is good oil. I had mine checked at black stone labs and was told it was holding up very well to my 6,250 miles on it. they even said with my driving I could go up to 8000 miles on the Shell Rotella T6.

My oil gets dark too. used to get black as coal after a 100 miles or less now with the GDE tune I swear it doesn't get that black for a few thousand miles. some other guy said his oil never does go black since his tune and I didn't believe him, now I think there is a little truth in that tale. for what I see it might be streached some.

I agree.
A couple times a year Advanced Auto Parts will have a sale where you can get 5 quarts and a filter
for $30.

I've started to use Mobil1 0-40 Turbo Diesel. Not cheap, but a bit less than Mobil 1 ESP(5-30)!

Really? Another oil debate?
Can't a guy post that there is acceptable oil on sale without the 0w 5w mobil, shell, loyalties.

I use Rotela T6 because my girl friend use to work for a Shell distributor and one of his friend offert us a discount but if you can find 4L jug of T6 for $15 you got a hell of a deal! Here in Canada Walmart sale 5L jug for $34.97!http://www.walmart.ca/Automotive/Motor-Oils-Fluids-Filters/Motor-Oils/Synthetic-Engine-Oils/Rotella-T6-5W-40-5L

Here some other good choice for API CJ-4 certified oil.

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP
Valvoline premium blue extreme
Amsoil 5-40W Diesel oil

Has the original CF rating been superseded with CJ-4 now that the sulfur in diesel has been removed?
