Post subject: | OBD P0299...replacing parts and still on....HELP... |
I went off-roading with budies last week end. Crossing from France to Italy through the Alps, real great. First off-road trail, was going very slowly, lasted 15mn. Arrived on top at the pass. stopped 30 mn. When switching on the engine again: Engine light switched-on the saved mode went on as well (=limited power and limited rev.). managed easily to drove back home (approx. 80 miles) at around 65mph, just a but slower to pick-up speed and really slow going up-hill. The local AAA identified a P0299 code. I have already replaced the OEM CAC hose with SAMCOs a long time ago. so i am used with hose blowing up, with the noise and total lost of power. This time the engine has still quite a lot of power and runs well. I am still able to drive around in the traffic, reaching 65mph, leaving traffic light within the flow of other cars. Its just when i floor the gas pedal down that the rig takes its time to pick-up speed. -I cleaned (FINALLY !!) my MAP sensor: a pack of dirt. (used WD40....) and i can feel the difference:much smoother ride. Erased the error code but it came back after 2-3 miles after. -I am waiting to receive a new MAF sensor. will replace it . -I took off my SAMCO CACs yesterday night and cleaned them and inspected them. Was very surprised to see lots of small and not-so-small cuts inside the first hose (turbo to air-cooler, driver side), really deep cuts/cracks. i could not see these cuts going through the outside so i don't think the hose is dead.(am i wrong ?) -I went through most of the vacuum lines, did not see corrosion or dents, but still, am not saying that the check is 100% good. What are the other things to check ? I have some kind of relay for the vacuum, with a small filter at the bottom(passenger side of the engine), then the line goes to a valve...Should it be replaced / checked ? thanks !!! |

You can read more about the problem your having here: viewtopic.php?t=23766&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=p0299 or here: viewtopic.php?t=23766&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=p0299 Get a vaccum pump and check for loss of vaccum: http://www.amazon.com/MHB-LB122-SET-Han ... s_indust_3 When I got this code it was due to stuck vanes in my turbo charger, I solved it by driving it hard while going up a steep hill for a long stretch, doing this helped dislodge the carbon stuck on the turbo vanes and free the turbo. Put the pedal to the metal while going up a steep hill and if the code returns just keep clearing the codes using a code reader over and over again and it will eventually clear itself. Worked for me. |

Ok, not being very successful on that one. Loss of power is still there and p0299 keeps coming back. Here what I have done so far: -replaced the MAP -Replaced the MAF -Replaced my Salvo's with stock set of CAC. -Run ORM -Inspected the vacuum line from splendid to valve -Bypassed the Vacuum booster -inspected the FCV valve (on driver side hose intake) ....and same loss of power and p0299..... Any idea ?... |

I had the gears on my FCV break off and the butterfly valve on my jeep was stuck almost stuck shut. I had the P0299 and looked at many different problems to deduce the culprit. You can take off the turbo hose post-intercooler and manually feel if the valve is opening fully (turns completely horizontal) or if it is stuck partially/fully closed. One quicker test would be to have someone sit in the jeep and rev the engine a number of times watching for the pre-intercooler turbo hose for expansion which would indicate a building of boost. Hopefully that is clear and helpful if you haven't checked that out. |

found it !!!! ![]() I had checked only the vacuum hose from the solenoid to the EGR. I removed the one from the solenoid to the back panel (slightly larger diameter) yesterday night, i could barely remove the braded protector from the tube, both were welded together from the heat.... The tube was totally destroyed of course... hope you can see from the piccs.... I ordered a new set from the US : 58$ plus USPS.... Also, i want to rebuilt a set myself out of metal pipe, i cant be convinced that plastic pipes are doing fine in the hot environment of an engine bay...... Someone has done it before ? Thanks to all of you !!! Again this forum has amazing members and resource !! And thanks for the tips METCRD, the FCV butterfly was my next step, allthough i had already seen that it seems to work fine. ![]() ![]() |

Where was that hose located exactly, did it route around the fire wall? I picture the EGR valve to be on the drivers side and the vaccum selenoid is on the passenger side. |

Erratum, you are right the line that was not damaged was going from the solenoid the turbo, or to a valve on top of the turbo (not to the EGR). That line is fine . The one which melt down (pics above) and collapsed on itself under vacuum, is going from the solenoid to a T junction at the back panel, it goes behind the cooling fluid tank (2 bolds from the tank needs to be remove to lift the tank up, to unplug the line safely). There, it is connected to a T junction: one line goes into the dashboard (hole on the passenger side. Any idea what a vacuum line is going there for ?.... ![]() When i unpluged the damaged portion of the line, i heard a long whistle from the line that is going to the driver side. As you see on the pics the line has melt down and collapsed on itself, the side going to the breaks sealed itself when it melted so the vacuum got trapped. that explains that i did not experience sluggish breaks i guess, no? The side going to the solenoid is open to the outside= hole, so that gave me the lack of power and the P0299. I will take pics of the exact location of that demaged line tonight and post them. |

Well that is surprising, I'll have to check mine and make some protective modifications. Was the plastic vaccum line touching the hot coolant tank? |

i will never manage to write it corretly ![]() ![]() yes the line that was damaged was touching a metal piece part of the coolant tank. But that portion was protected by the braded tube. Result , the protective tube and the line were welded together. On the pics you may be able to see some stripes on the line, these are actually where the protector was welded to the line. I had to use a knife to open the protector and separate it from the line...Again, i will take some more precise pics of the location and post them. |

here are some aditional pics of the Line. it is the one with slighly larger diameter, which is connected to the solenoid by downward U flexible tube. the point were it is melted is indicated by the knife:on that pic the 2 lines from the solenoid are still taped together, the protectors are removed. the one damaged is the larger and shorter line with the downward U at one end. ![]() and some closer look at the damage: ![]() ![]() and here is an attempt to show the exact location of where the line was passing and where it was broken. on this pics the coolant tank is unhooked and slightly lifted up: (please totate the pic 90 degre clockwise, could not do it in Photobucket... ![]() ![]() ok, let me know if this is clear, or if you need more info. And GOOD LUCK in getting your KJ back to normal !! |

First thing to check are the vanes on the turbo charger for free movement using a vaccum pump, you cannot easily see the vanes they are located on the exhaust side of the turbo. |

It's good that you documented this, IIRC one or two other people have had this problem in the past. |

camo wrote: ok guys, permission to enter on board ![]() that being said, is there any other sugestion on where or what to check? tractor seems to be running ok, and since provent and egr blockoff engine its been very clean. sugestions? thnx This is going to be a constant issue for your CRD in its current configuration. The P0299 is related to the EGR in this case. By physically blocking the EGR circuit you are preventing the closed loop air flow control from functioning as designed. The MAF sensor is reading a higher value than desired, so the system keeps asking for the EGR valve to open further (which does no good since the flow is blcoked), but at the same time the FCV (intake throttle) is being commanded to close more to create a larger pressure differenial across the EGR circuit to flow more EGR. Just off idle the normal position for FCV is about 30% closed, but yours is at maximum closure in this condition at about 80% closed. This is choking the air flow in the intake and reducing the boost pressure at least 3psi lower than expected and setting a low boost fault. This is also putting additional stress on your turbo as the vanes continue to close to try to increase the boost even though it is pushing air against a wall (closed FCV). In essence, the effect is shifting the turbo operating point closer to the surge limit. Hopefully this makes sense and helps you understand what the ECM is doing. |

Thnx GDE, it makes total sense and explains why I have not found any vacuum problems even using the pump to test. The full torque tune will take care of that right? as you explained it on one of you emails, the egr will open when it needs that back flow of air but it won't open to let soot going into the engine. am I right? so, how can the ORM mood won't cause this issue? isn't the ORM suppose to prevent the egr from opening? if so, wouldn't a plate blocking the egr flow do the same thing as the ORM? as far as I've read on several threads for the ORM, it does not cause the p0299. anyway, I'm removing the plate at the egr now and I will be on ORM until I complete the money for my FT GDE tune. thnx a lot guys YOU MAKE MY LIBBY A BETTER TRACKTOR EVERY DAY ![]() |
