Post subject: | Issue with cruise control - Sentry related? |
Here's the story - about a month ago, my wife was out of town with her parents and woke up Sunday morning to find her Jeep would not start. We had a Sentry issue before, but were able to get around it by disconnecting the battery for a half an hour or so and then trying again. I walked her through that process to no avail and we had it towed to the closest Jeep dealership. The guys at the dealership said we had a bad SKIM and replaced that along with the PCM (also bad per them). We go to pick it up and the tire pressure light is on. Turns out, when they replaced the SKIM, they activated tire pressure monitoring, which we don't have. Back to the dealership and they fix that problem. Fast forward a week or so and I am driving it and notice that I have no cruise control - as in, when I hit the on/off switch, I don't even get any indication on the instrument cluster it is coming on/turning off. I figure this has to be related to what was done before, so called the dealership, got them to agree to comp a local dealership to do the fix, and take it in today. I get a call tonight from the dealer saying they don't think it is the SKIM, but that it is a bad clock spring or servo in the cruise motor, BUT they don't really know and have a call in to a tech support help line. Anyone on here had a similar problem or have any advice I can pass along? I have a feeling their "fix" is going to be a new cruise motor, which, if I am guessing right, won't fix the problem. Thanks in advance. Chris |

CRD's are drive by wire and "there ain't no cruise motor" ![]() I think I read on another thread that GDE told them to push and hold ON button for a certain amount of time and it might relearn it has cruise ![]() |

The first thing to try is to key on (engine doesn't have to be running), press and hold the cruise button in the on position for up to 10-15 seconds - if the learning function is active, the CRUISE light will appear in the cluster and it's good to go. If that doesn't work, you'll need to go by a dealer to re-enable the cruise learning, then perform the above procedure. This has to be done every time the PCM is replace (starting from a virgin module that's never been coded before). |

Thanks for the insight. I am going to pass this along and hopefully they can get it fixed. Chris |

Chris Ya if the ECU was replaced then the cruise control needs to be enabled again, if you have not tried to use the cruise since the ECU was replaced I would say its likely the dealer neglected to do this. |

This story ended in the only way it could - the dealer not knowing their butt from a hole in the ground. I got a call Friday afternoon from the dealer rep saying I had a bad clock spring which had taken out the on/off switch. Cost to replace would be $495 and he didn't think it had anything to do with the replacement of the SKIM/PCM. By that point, I had had enough of what they were saying and said I just would come pick it up. No charge for their work because they didn't replace anything. Best part is this - I pull out of the parking lot, get it up to 45 mph, turn on the cruise, set it, and go. The doofuses at the dealer apparently hadn't done a road test on the Jeep because it is working fine. I can now confirm that Koon's Tyson's Jeep in Vienna, VA can be crossed off of the list of competent mechanics in this area. Its good to know they are suggesting $500 repairs for problems they have already fixed. Chris |
