Post subject:  I need your help !! smoking KJ

When i was driving the Liberty, i got a CEL. I was on the road to get my girl friend back to work, so i keep driving and keep eyes on the dash board. One the road back to home, in traffic we have to take the bridge and i start to see the temperature goes up.... i let it go until the 3/4 mark.... then turn the heater to max. vent and max. temperature. It goes back to the normal position (1/2). After the bridge i put it back to cool air and normal fan speed. It takes a more long time to go up but when i get home it was back to 3/4. I open the hood to see if the fan was working and it was full speed. I stop the engine and look for the CEL code.

1263: glow plug #2 control circuit low. So I’m good for the new glow plugs kit.
I was waiting 1-2 weeks to get the extra money to do the job. So i think it's time to clean brakes and MAP sensor. I also clean turbo hose and EGR hose. I make de elephant hose modification.

After that i notice white smoke at the exhaust pipe. I was thinking, it was the cleaning product.
Let it idle for a moment. I notice more smoke, when giving fuel.
At that point i found my mistake.... i have put a plastic plug at the end of the elephant hose.... so I take it off and restart the engine... no more smoke...so i was happy... and think it's time for a ride around the house.

It takes 2 minutes and my street was full of smoke, so i get back to home.
I found oil on the turbo blower. Take of the hose and found some oil at the output of the turbo and in the hose. Take of the inter cooler to EGR valve hose .... some oil there to.....

So there i am.....it’s 2 problems? Are they reliable?

For the white smoke i think i have a blow turbo, but i know you gar's know a lot on the liberty i would like to have your advice.

Can I have blow my turbo by putting a plastic plug at the EHM and run the engine?

Thanks !

The added crankcase pressure with the plugged vent could of blown some oil pass the turbo seal and properly the reason for the smoking in the first place. Since you unplugged the vent, I would keep running it and keep an eye on oil consumption.

Thanks BlackLibertyCRD.
Yes i have unplugged the vent. It was done before, my last little ride in my street.... and it was smoking.

I have check the turbine. I have a free play by pushing front and back, i can feal a toc toc when moving.

I'm from Canada, Québec. I call the stealer for the price....lol...
3300$ can. for a rebult unit and they are back order.

I talk to a other diesel shop(official Garrett distributor), i can have a new one for 1200$
400-500$ for rebulting my oem.

Can this have cause problems to the engine ?

There's got to be a little play from front to back which is normal as long as the blades don't touch. If the hoses and intercooler got lots of oil in it, there will be some time before it's burn off. Maybe best you remove it and clean it out but first you want to be sure the turbo is not leaking. Just clean the outlet hose from the turbo, re-install it, then check the same hose after running a few miles. If it loaded with oil again, bad turbo, if not have a cigar. :SOMBRERO:

When I talk about back and front I mean pushing the fan and pulling it. I think the right words are back and forth

I talk to a turbo tech. today and he talk about 2 thousandth
(0.002) he told me that a hair is 0.004.
I can feel the free play I estimate it most like 1mm. And can be more.
He was also concerne about the oil in intercooler...

I'm concern about your advise but I'm a little bit nervous to restart the engine at this point but I keep open mind

This is right from Garrett

How much shaft play should my dual ball bearing turbo have?
The Garrett full ball-bearing turbo is designed to have clearance between the bearing cartridge and center housing for hydrodynamic damping in addition to the internal clearances of the bearing cartridge itself. Hydrodynamic damping uses the incompressible properties of a liquid (oil in this case) and the space around the bearing cartridge to dampen the shaft motion of the rotating assembly. When the turbo is new, or has not operated for a long period of time allowing most of the oil to drain out, the rotating assembly will move more in the radial direction than a typical journal-bearing turbo because there is no oil in the center housing. This condition is normal. As long as the shaft wheel spins freely and the wheels don't contact their respective housings, the assembly will function properly.

Thanks for the link !

Do you think i should clean the intercooler ? If yes does it have to be remove ?
What product i can use to clean hose ?
Does i have to be concern, about the and the engine, or it will clean it self ?
I have buy a new air filter, should i change it right now or wating after the smoke stop ?

What about the glow plug CEL ? Can i run the jeep or i should change the glow plugs first.
Is there any link between, glow plug, heat go up and turbo ?

Have a good day !

Some answers:
1. I wouldn't bother to try to clean the intercooler. IMHO you would have to pull it and use something like hot water and Dawn. What's in there is oil which will work it's way they the system if you stop adding more oil. If you suspect an intercooler leak a low pressure test can be performed on the vehicle although leak location and repair will likely require removal.
2. I used a basic engine degreaser and rags to clean the hoses. Messy but did the job. FYI while I had no tears the turbo>intercooler hose was spongy (e.g. soaked with oil thru and thru) so I only put the OEM hoses back on long enough to get SAMCOs shipped in.
3. Depending on what you do the engine will largely clean itself of the oil especially if you do like the EHM or Provent to dump or capture the extra oil. If you can get rid of most or all of the soot by minimizing EGR function (GDE tune or SEGR) you won't get anymore filthy sootty oil build up on the MAP and in the intake. What I cannot speak to is whether or not the buldup thats already there will go away over time. Others might know better than I.
4. Air filter is "up stream" from any smoke problem so put it in but be sure to check the lower end of the airbox to turbo hose for damage due to excess oil right where it connects to the turbo. See Sir Sams post of changing a timing belt for what I mean.
5. Glow plugs - there is some worry about engine damage from broken pieces of ceramic glow plugs. But with respect to not working glow plugs there will be zero harm in running the engine in warmer climates (like where I am) as the glow plugs simply don't come on but in colder climates you might have some hard starting problems if you don't plug in the block heater. Beyond that I'll let those who have delt more with glow plugs weigh in.

I clean everything again and there is almost no oil in the intercooler.
By cons I could not roll the KJ as I also have a problem with GP
