some crd owners may not know crd's require special antifreeze. diesel engine construction is of 2 types. one is a one piece
cast construction such as the dodge truck engine. the other is a wet sleeve construction. the matorie engine is wet sleeve.
during combustion wet sleeves ring causing cavitation between the outside of the cylinders and the antifreeze. this causes erosion of the metal on the out side of the cylinder.in time this will eat pinholes through cylinder. this is major damage and requires resleeving the engine. if you have any doubt about your antifreeze i suggest changing it.
drain, flush and be sure you get all the old antifreeze out. they are not compatible.
use only a HOAT (hybrid organic additive technology) type antifreeze. mopar 5 year part no. 68048953ab is ok. also cummins mack and other big truck companies offer such antifreeze. other brands may be ok but be sure.

There is lots of chat on the forum regarding antifreeze and the need to use HOAT as opposed to other products including "universal" ones. The common product used that's less pricey than Mopar is Xerex G-05 which is available from such places as NAPA.

Other "fluid" problems that folks have run into with after market service and some dealer service include the need to use a diesel rated synthetic oil of the proper weight and ATF+4 for the automatic tranny, power steering pump and transfer case.

2X on Zerex G-05 mopar is too expensive but Zerex is the same stuff for less, just not had at all parts stores. Napa has it though or can get it. Just don't listen to any dumb parts monkey that tells you universal is fine. Universal prestone is OAT chemistry not HOAT. OAT coolant can eat up some of the plastics in some chrysler cooling systems and is not ok for diesel engines like G-05 is as far as I know.

I use CAT diesel antifreeze.
$12 a gallon at my local truck store. Best you can buy

I had read through 65 pages of "love that torque" and had not seen any thing on this topic. so I though I would bring it up. It might save someone a major breakdown. It would cost almost as much to rebuild this engine than a big truck engine. I have been through one of Cummins plants and also watched resleeving and the resleeving takes much longer. It would probably cost much less to buy another engine.

Which is OAT coolant,AKA Dexacool.

don't think that one you linked is HOAT.
Our vehicles need HOAT and NOT OAT (dexcool).

The "H" makes all of the difference.

The link is to an OAT extended life Zerex that in contrast to Zerex G-05 is NOT approved for Ford or Chrysler diesel engines. Check the respective MSDS sheets for both products which are available at the referenced link.

I just buy the Mopar coolant it is easier for me. I buy the oil from the Mercedes Benz dealer when I am there in Florida. Almost $3/L cheaper in Fl than it is here at MB.

I totally agree. I plan on keeping my CRD for a long time, and to pay an extra $18.00 for two gallon of Mopar coolant, which will last another 5 years, is a silly, moot point. I'm not that much of a tight wad. :wink:
