my understanding is that the renegade version of the liberty had more ground clearanace. How would we accomplish this? would I have to buy a full lift kit?

That would be false.

Any KJ built before April 12th 2002 was 3/4" higher then those built after but you can not order those coils,wouldn't work for your CRD anyways.Just get the OME 790's,OME 948's,and your choise of the correct front/rear shocks.
