Post subject:  Latest from observations from third timing belt change
This time, BOTH timing belt idler pulleys had play in their bearings before unbolting them. And both had leaked out a significant amount of grease, grey in color. I think 100,000 miles is the life of these, no more. The tensioner was tight and good shape.
I'm uncertain about this water pump as I found corrosion around the weep hole, but is was dry. I had my mind made up to replace it anyway.

I disagree about the life of the pulleys, but you did find the failure mode - grease ejection and bearing play. The only thing you didn't mention, were the bearings howling too?

I only replaced the belt on mine, the pulleys were all rock stable and clean as the day they were installed.
However, I have just had to replace my turbo recently for the second time and this time the bearings failed slowly... And were making a LOT of noise.
Moral of the story for anyone else - LISTEN to your engine, if something changes, check on it PRONTO!

This timing belt job was on a different CRD, my latest addition, CRD #2. It has 104,000 miles on it. Something else different that I noticed on this one, was that the inner edge (facing motor) of the timing belt had been worn with a very polished look to it. I could not see any rubbing on the inner cover. The belt must have been running off, wearing on the inner side of crank pulley.
As for bearing growl, something didn't sound normal compared to my other CRD, but I couldn't pin point where from, I will let you know if it is now quieter after I finish the timing belt job.

I totally agree. I lecture my wife and daughters to turn off the loud stereo once in a while, and listen to the sounds that the vehicle makes, to get an idea of what is normal :banghead:

FWIW, both of my idler pulleys were going out but both were still operational. One was worse than the other, sounding like someone put some sand in it. Both spun freely. My water pump has developed a very slight leak (undetectable until removed) where it bolts to the engine.

Our Jeep is my wife's daily ride and she has yet to fill it! Forget about checking oil. But we have only had it 3 years. :mrgreen:
