Post subject:  HELP! Going into Limp Mode has Codes P0299 and P0234
Going into Limp (wimp) mode everytime I use the turbo. Runs fine until I need power to pass or accelerate for exmple. Both codes relate to overboost and underboost of the turbocharger.

This is what I have done so far: cleaned the MAP sensor, removed and cleaned both turbo hoses..no visible cracks or holes in the turbo hoses.

Who else had this problem and what did you find? Is there anything else I can do before taking jeep into service shop?

If you don't hear the turbo making noises then the turbo may need a simple cleaning. First make sure you are using the specified oil and it's at the proper level.

It happend to me and this is what I did:

I checked to see if the turbo actuator was moving freely by using a vaccum pump. I continually just tried to move the vanes using the pump, mine didn't move much so here is what I did to free them.

I searched for the steepest hill I could find and pointed the vehicles nose to the sky then put the pedal to the metal and began to blow the stuck on crud away from the vanes.

This put me in limp mode several times and i just kept turning the light off with a code reader. I did this many times over and felt the vanes beginning to move more and more.

After doing that for about an hour, i took it on the open freeway and floored it when the coast was clear to flush even more of the crud out. This solved the problem and I got my turbo to spin freely.

I do this every once in a while to keep the turbo healthy, keep doing it every chance you get and the engine light will remain off.

This maybe all you need to do.

My turbo variable vanes were completely frozen. I had to take the turbo apart to clean it. Works great now.

What side of the turbo are the varible vanes on this turbo? Are the vanes on the exhaust or air intake side? and where is the turbo actuator located on this turbo?

I think I had the same codes on mine a couple of years ago, the problem was the turbo actuator or turbo actuator valve. At the time it was under warranty so I didn't work on it. It was one of the reasons I decided to sell it, since the CRD was so rare, parts all took a few days to get.

Now I have a more mainstream diesel, the TDI which I'm getting 42 mpg as a daily driver, 46 on long trips. I haven't had to get any parts for it yet, but when I bought mine, the dealer had over 40 TDI's in stock. Parts have to be quicker to get.

I did a little looking and found that the problem I had was the actuator valve and not the actuator itself.

wander what are the towing characteristics on the tdi :wink:

I do this several times a day to.... well... 'er "just cuz it's FUN!" I didn't know I was doing preventative maintenance!

Think that excuse will fly if I get pulled over?

Both the VW TDIs and the CRD share variable-vane turbos, with vacuum actuated control mechanisms. And both need to have the turbo run through its full range of movement from time to time, lest the vanes freeze up. Both also need to be occasionally run full throttle all the way up to redline to blow the soot out of the exhaust system. NO, not every time you accelerate, although that can be lots of fun. But at least once or twice a week.

I drive up a 400+ ft elevation change hill every day and always make sure the turbo is fully spooled and I still had a problem with the turbo actuator valve. The CRD had power but no legs, a passing maneuver with the TDI ends up pulling back into my lane at 80 and gaining fast. Much more fun.

Too bad you didn't know how to drive the CRD.

You missed the class on how to properly use your Coglione's when driving it, because if you knew how, you would have never sold it.

The CRD is not meant for everyone, you need to know how to drive it and work on it.

The CRD loves to cruise at 90 and can reach speeds of 110 to 120 and above in seconds, definitely not for everyone.
