Post subject:  HELP!!! Security system won't clear.

Wife and I went boating the other day and when we got back my Jeep won't start. The first time I tried it, it turned over several times and I stopped, then tried a second time. That time I heard a click and nothing else. Thought the battery was low but jumping made no change and by now there was not even a click. Got a ride home and brought back my pickup and winched the Jeep on a trailer and brought it home. Had battery disconnected while I checked connections and fuses. When I hooked battery back up the dash goes crazy when I try to start it. Everything is normal until I go to the start position and then all the dash lights flash off and on with nothing else happening. The key will lock and unlock the Jeep and the panic will go off and can be reset turning on the key. I think I pissed off the security system when I had the battery disconnected.
It is a 06 Liberty CRD and this is the first trouble I've had with it. Any help will be appreciated.

I posted this in another area and it was suggested to try here. Sorry for the duplicate posts.

Sounds like a bad battery.

Do you have the original optima battery?

The battery voltage will drop to a critical level where the computers stop to function long before things like lights and windows stop to function.

Leave your battery on a charger overnight and then see if the jeep starts up normally.

There is no stock security system to piss off unless you installed something aftermarket.

I concur with Sir Sam that the first thing to look at is the battery which sounds bad, if it's really bad even an overnight charge may not help but most any parts store can load test the battery. As to jump starting; I've never tried it and some have said it won't work. I do see a note in the Owner's Manual "NOTE: To start the vehicle following connection of a booster battery, the Security Alarm System (see my comment below) must first be disabled by cycling a front door key cylinder or by using the keyless entry transmitter." You could also try dropping in the battery from your truck or with the CRD battery out of the circuit carefully connecting the jumper cables directly to the CRD battery cables which may make the system "think" your truck battery is installed in the CRD for starting purposes.

For what it's worth there is an instrument cluster test but it can only be triggered by holding the trip odometer button while turning the ignition on and all it does is cycle thru various light and gauge positions. See the FSM for the writeup

However, there is a stock security system that you almost certainly have. It's the Sentry Key Immobilizer System but what you describe doesn't sound like a problem with that system which is designed to kill the engine after a start with an invalid key. A bad battery in the key fob may annoy this system but you said the CRD would not start so it's unlikely to be a SKIS problem.

The crank and no start could also be related to air in the fuel had but that may be a secondary problem unrelated to a bad battery.

I learned a very long time ago on a 1978 VW rabbit diesel that it's very difficult if not impossible to jump start a diesel :banghead:

I too suspect your battery is bad or you have a battery cable that internally corroded.

And there IS a STOCK security system. If the security system is giving trouble like with a unprogramed key it will start but only run for a few seconds then shut off. Under certain conditions it may not even crank. I was messing around with a cheap scanner and got mine "confused" and it didn't recognize the key and would start but shut off. In that case removing the battery cables cured my problem.

Sam to prove this to yourself put a ECM from another CRD into your CRD and see what happens. It's called a SKIM and here's what they say.
The skim module is Chrysler terminology for a combined
immobiliser and aerial module.

Here's a tool and a discription.

A few weeks ago I had a problem regarding the SKIM.
After turning on the ignition....the SKIM light in the cluster would come on and stay on and I could not start the engine at all.
Turned out that the SKIM module sends the code that the transponder in the key has given it to the ECU then the ECU...if it is happy with the code... energises the Auto shut down relay which should allow the starter to engage...in my case I had a broken wire from the ECU to the Auto shut down relay.

I agree though that it is probably the battery....I have never had a problem jump starting my CRD with jump cables and another battery or vehicle...provided that the donor battery is powerful enough and thick jumper cables are used!

Oh man, you have no idea how intimately familiar I am with the skim/skis system, to the point of me finally figuring out how to defeat it.

But, thats just a security/transponder key, its not a full on security system, if someone busts a window and unlocks the door, nothing triggers. And like stated before, the vehicle runs for 3 seconds and then shuts off, this sounds nothing like the SKIS system.

You guys are great!!! I replaced the battery, not believing it was the problem, but it was 5 years old. I know batterys don't last very long in any car let alone a diesel. I had tried hooking up my 200 amp charger and it still made no difference. Then I hooked up my multimeter that has a recording feature (Fluke 87). When I would try starting the battery voltage would drop to around 6 volts. That is when I went for a new battery. This problem has made do some research and this site is fantastic. I have found out about several things that will bite me down the road if I don't take care of them. I plan on working on several of them this weekend. Thanks to all that have replied!!! I really do appreciate the help.

Hehe, always nice to call a problem correctly!
