Hey guys

Ive currently got a 05' Libby CRD. Ive loved it for the couple of years ive had her but I love love love a nice TJ even the older ones (as in pre 2000)

Just wondering if i'd be crazy to sell the diesel and go for a TJ round the 2000 - 02' range.

I do a fair bit of 4x4ing, no kids just a dog bla bla bla

I guess my main concern is losing the diesel for gas and getting lesser fuel mileage.

Let me know what you think please...

Yes your dumb because you want to give meeeee the tj:). No you are not dumb I would change to a tj pretty easily although my wife would not be happy as I would spend more money. :). Go get it I think it is fine. :D

Oh and ad for milage not sure they really get that much less. The tanks are smaller that is for sure. When I drive my father in laws I am always filling it but it has a ...15 gallon tank I think and it is pretty decked out.

Why not get both? I have a bunch of vehicles around here, kinda nice to drive a different vehicle everyday.

kingjeep - Live in a great spot for 4x4ing and daily driving isn't much really, as long as it's not like riding a horse and cart lol

It depends on what you want to do. I have a '97 TJ (along with an '05 CRD). There's nothing like a real Jeep if you have places to drive it. I lived in Moab for 8 years and it was a natural. Now I'm in N Utah and it's really kind of a waste.

Less power, burn more fuel . . . but a TJ can do things the Liberty can never do. . . no matter how many mods are done to it. I've tried taking the CRD over slickrock sections where I had plenty of clearance and it just didn't have the traction to get that heavy front end up steep pitches. Plenty of torque to burn the front tires, just not enough traction. This ____/ is the kind of formation. It's suppose to represent going from flat and putting the front wheels on a very steep pitch and simply crawling up.

Around 4 wheeling areas there are always Jeep rentals. The best scenario would be to rent something similar to what you have in mind to buy and take it out on the terrain. Better yet, get someone to take you out in his machine.

Depends soley on what you want to do with it.

Offroad? TJ wins.
Take the top completely off on a nice day? TJ wins.

Everything else? KJ CRD wins.

Back when the CRD and the TJ Rubicon were both relatively brand new, I almost did an even trade for a TJ but ended up not doing it. I just couldn't justify going to less cargo space, half the fuel economy, more noise, less towing capacity, less amenities for the family, etc. etc. The CRD just blows the TJ out of the water in every conceivable category except rock crawling. So to me... it just wasn't worth it.

I've got an '05 LJ Rubicon and my wife has a '05 CRD. Here's my somewhat educated analysis:

TJ/LJ -
- wins on fun factor, nice to be able to take the top off on a nice day, more fun to drive, much better off road (as in several orders of magnitude)
- loses on fuel economy (I get about 15-17 mpg average overall), cargo space, practicality

CRD -
- wins on fuel economy (she gets about 26-27 average overall, 30+ on the highway with the GDE ECO and trans tunes), day-to-day is much more practical, no security worries with a soft top (we live in the city), you can fit a lot more stuff in it if you need to move anything
- loses on coolness and fun factor (sorry, but a Liberty is never going to live up to a Wrangler in that category)

I got my LJ because I wanted something fun to drive and figured I didn't have too much time before I'd need something more practical. I got that, but you will find yourself at the gas pump a LOT more often.

Just my .02.

Chris

I think what we are getting at here is that you need to have both. TJ for when you wanna do more difficult wheeling, KJ CRD for everything else.

Do it.

Yes, yes you would be crazy, :dizzy: and not just a little. The amount of fuel economy a CRD KJ gets compared with a TJ a enables you to buy lots of fun stuff :D for your Jeep and still get MPG'S and drive a cool vehicle. :pepper:

I've got one.

The TJ is great for the woods, it squeezes through the trails and climbs over obsticles like a tank.

The top down makes cruising by the beach a pleasure.

But it has poor mileage, a rough ride and it doesn't come close to the CRD.

Would I trade one for the other? NOPE, I'll keep both.

I would love a CRD in the Sahara.

I'm secretly hoping that someone hits my CRD just hard enough to total it so I can buy it back from the insurance and transplant the motor into a TJ!

PM me your address. Leave the Keys and $500 in cash under the drivers seat. Problem solved.

Nope. I love the little bugger too much to do that! IF it happened I wouldn't be too saddened, but I wouldn't do it on purpose. Hell, I let an intern from work drive it all week while I work on her POS Impala... of course she seems to take better care of it than my wife! If my wife takes it the Evic drops from 29.5 to 25 in a day. When the intern takes it she manages 28+ so she must not be beating it...I hope.

Whats an xj?? I can't keep up with these acronyms... :jester:
