Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [to Igor] Now that brain that you gave me. Was it Hans Delbruck's?
Igor: [pause, then] No.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Ah! Very good. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in?
Igor: Then you won't be angry?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: I will NOT be angry.
Igor: Abby someone.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [pause, then] Abby someone. Abby who?
Igor: Abby... Normal.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [pause, then] Abby Normal?
Igor: I'm almost sure that was the name.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: [chuckles, then] Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch wide GORILLA?
[grabs Igor and starts throttling him]
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Is that what you're telling me?

So the rest of my rockers came in today, actually several days early, after a quick dinner of a few pounds of chicken we hopped out to the garage and got to work, got the rockers in, the injector sealing surfaces cleaned up, the intake carefully put back on(this is nerve racking as its easy to knock the rockers off of their perches as nothing really holds them in place). Then injectors, fuel rail, wiring etc, and cranked it over. After a bit of cranking and me forgetting to connector the whatever it is on the back of the fuel rail it fired up and puttered nicely.

So after only $1000 in parts it running, and just needs to be reassembled, interior cleaned, title paperwork done, then its up for sale!

Very nice. How much time would you estimate you spent on the engine repair?

A fair amount, I spent some time doing some different diagnostics and such, heck I even pulled the cams/valve cover off and then put it back on again and tried running it. when I did that it ran better, but still not right. So the first time I put it back together I just got the timing right, then I pulled it back off and after messing around and looking at things for a while found the bad rockers.

As several others have mentioned before the rockers are designed to fail in the event of a valve piston contact, I thought that meant they would physically bend, but actually it means the roller part of the rocker collapses.

Indeed it is.

Good work Sam,

SO the reason for the failure was a timing belt that skipped a tooth?

How many man hours did the head require for replacement?

How did the head gasket look, was it still in good shape?

Did you reuse the head bolts?

Was it a difficult job?

I am pretty sure the failure was related to a belt skipping.

I did not replace the head, on take off the intake/cams to replace the rockers, that in itself is probably a minimum of a 12 hour job.

Yep, I saw your pics. I've never seen a rocker do that before. I spent a while peering at them before i figured out what you were showing. :)

Ya they are a little wet still, but tomorrow AM I may do yet another pass at the seats to clean em up, this fabric sucks! I guess I should have taken some pictures before, but there were a number of coffee and soda spills on them. I'm so glad I got leather in the other jeep now, that fabric was getting tiresome.
