When I leave work on any given occasion. The CRD will start, but when I put it in drive it will almost not idle high enough to stay running. When I come to my first stop after going it will stall. Once I start it again, good to go. My initial thought was fuel filter... any initial thoughts? |

Air in fuel filter head especially if you have the 1st gen fuel head which really should be replaced; bad fuel resulting in clogged filter are both likely |

Air in fuel or dirty fuel filter might cause this. |

i've been hearing a lot of people on here talking about the first generation fuel filter head.... can somebody post a pic of the first gen vs. the second gen? I want to see the difference so I can figure out what I have thanks |

There is a picture out there somewhere that was posted just recently at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62441&p=690773&hilit=+fuel#p690773 and I've posted a verbal description at viewtopic.php?f=5&t=62422&p=690738#p690738 |

I should also add that its possible that the transmission is causing this too, a transmission fluid flush and new filters may be in order if they haven't been done in awhile. |

I thought about the tranny fluid problem but the symptoms did not sound quite right. My experience with that problem is either the tranny won't engage at all until the fluid pumps up or if it does engage the vehicle runs fine for ca. 150' and then suffers a really hard stall sometimes with a CEL. Not impossible though but I'd check air in fuel first. If that doesn't fix your problem try this. At startup bring the idle in Neutral, not Park as no fluid is pumped in Park, up to about 1500rpm, hold that rpm for a slow count of 10-15, engage the tranny, and drive off. If the problem was occuring regularly but no longer occurs after using this procedure then Sir Sam is right the tranny needs service. For tranny service be sure to use ATF+4 and name brand filters like the WIX 58843 filter and gasket kit. Do not go cheap on eBay as there are still some of the bad OEM and import filters being sold cheap out there. |

Pull a line from the tranny cooler and you will be convinced of this. Or feel the difference in temperature between the inlet line of the cooler and the outlet. |

catcrd - if you have been sprayed with ATF by loosening a line while idling in Park I'll take your word for it. That said there have been several mentions, other than mine, of not pumping in park and the FSM, if you believe it, doesn't not mention any transmission line test pressure in Park. Perhaps the difference relates to how the system performs if you have a bad drainback valve in a tranny filter. I can say with certainty that performing the tranny start procedure I mentioned earlier in this string with the tranny in Park does not work but it does work with the tranny in Neutral. The 2006 FSM (p 21-681) says the tranny pump is 2-stage hence I wonder if whatever pumping that happens in Park, very low demand, is too low pressure to pump the system up in a timely manner. |

You could be right about different flow rates between neutral and park. I don't know. But feel the difference in temp between the hard lines on the transmission cooler and you can tell there's flow. Also, some people change their tranny fluid by disconnecting the output line and idling the engine to pump out a few quarts, refill, repeat. |
