Retired from the USCG and picked up a consulting job that puts me on the road quite a bit, such as office is 1.5 hrs away (80 miles ea way) and I have to be there 2x per week, plus road trips!!! But I get paid for driving time and 51c per mile, so it's worth it.

Anyway, was looking for a 4x4 that got decent mpg as some of my trips will be to IL and MN in winter and chasing towboats down the banks of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers from time to time. Fell upon the CRD and couldn't believe it was out there and I never heard of it in the US, having owned 4 previous Jeeps!

Started my search and found a couple but were bought before I could get there. But, not to despair, I picked one up after only 1 week of searching! It's a silver 2005 Sport, 4x4, 59K miles, 1 owner, was traded in on an RV and was 5 min from the office! Was up to date on recall fixes (yes, F-37 reflashes) and has transferrable powertrain warranty left!

Visited the Newb board, did the EHM and ORM, cleaned the MAP, which wasn't bad but needed it, checked the air filter which wasn't bad but will replace anyway, MAF was clean, hoses were clean... overall seems in pretty good shape. Had an intermittent CEL but not worried as things seem well and now is permanent due to ORM until I chip/GDE it.

Bonus is that I have a 4200 Lb travel trailer that I think I can pull on short trips (basically to the campground to park it permanently) once I replace the TC! Has better capabilities than my mom's '95 Chevy 3/4 ton, 6.5 TD that I've used before! Really psyched and thanks to everyone that has posted info that I have already tapped to get me started.

Dreams are a small lift, little bigger tires, Offroad lights and bull bar, roof rack and hitch rack, chip or performance flash, straight pipe exhaust, improved airbox... just a good, dependable light offroad/long hwy trip/light towing vehicle for me and the fam. Looking forward to the fun!

Welcome! Don't be a stranger. Get a code reader and get that CEL sorted out.

try another browser such as firefox or chrome. Seems that explorer still has some issues on this site.

You will need a decent scanner, most will not get into the CRD..

Just get the GDE tune and u won't need the scanner. My only regret is that I waited till 90k to get the tune.

You can tow 4500 lbs with the stock converter, and when/if the shudder comes then u can upgrade.

It's a great vehicle, enjoy.

7k?! Really? I dont know... saw a pic of a guy pulling a 26 ft trailer and it looked like a mini-semi! Seems like it might get squirrely... Had my first round trip to the office today. So far have 315 miles and still showing half a tank left- we'll see how accurate the fuel guage is within the next couple of days, but very happy so far. Had it bog down on me today and acted like maybe it needs the fuel filter replaced from what I've read. That's next. Air filter got replaced today. Somebody wrote that if you had the F-37 done that you'd run over 1800 rpm at 60 mph (after shifting into 5th) but mine had it done prior to my buying and its turning 1750 in 5th and seems to me to have plenty of guts. Anyway, thanks for the replies. I'll keep it updated as I add to it. And I'll try the different browser so I can see the pics as well.

F-37 did not impact the rpms relative to travel speed. It did lower the torque output curve to protect the OEM weak torque convertor, a bean counter cheap fix rather than real fix, AND it changed the shift points raising the last shift point from about 58mph to about 62mph which indirectly raised the point where you will drop out of that last gearing. Pre-F-37 and with the GDE TCM tune you can hold the higher shift point down to about 54-55mph but with just F-37 you cannot go lower than about 58mph, a rather annoying difference especially in a 55mph speed zone. I've had pre-F-37, post F-37, and GDE TCM tune and in all cases an indicated 62mph (GPS verified) is right about 1,800rpm in final shift full lock-up so your turning 1,750 at 60mph is pretty much what I'd expect give or take speedometer error.
