We all seem to be replacing our glow plugs and I'm interested in SERIOUS failures resulting in engine damage or head inspection. This is for the original ceramic plugs only.

Not yet but given my location they are likely hardly ever used. I am though leaning toward replacement in conjunction with turbo and TC upgrade for no better reason than "just because". Kind of waiting on the ones that GDE is testing for an Italian firm as their design is 7v.

I think you'd have problems distinguishing cause and effect on a catastrophic fail.

I mean a valve would be broken off and the so would the glow plug and probably the timing belt now knocked loose - which caused which

I had about a dozen glow plugs die and the dealership tracked it to a cracked head.
on the final diagnosis the crack was clearly blowing coolant on the plug - but was it that way for the first one?.... I sure don't know.

I understand that if such a failure occurred, then yes it could be very difficult to finger the glow plug as the culprit. If you suspect that your plug was the cause of your initial failure then I would love to hear about it and I think so would everyone else.

My wallet considers this major damage. See pictures here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=58806&p=654675#p654675 I am still in the process of putting it together. It had 3 of 4 glow plugs broken off, 2 made it out of their cylinders without causing damage. The block has a new liner, I just reassembled the main bearing carriers and put the crank back in (the crank slides in through the back of the block and does not have main bearing caps). I will fit the rings next. I am concerned about the head, the shop it is at does AMAZING aluminum head work an says it is saveable. I got all of the parts he needed but he can't find specs for the installed height of the valves so he wants the cylinder head cover with the cams. The problem with that is when you put that cover on you can't measure the valve clearance. I'll make a new post to see if anyone knows where I can find vavle height specs. Thanks, Tigafila

3 of 3 split at the end but no missing ceramic or damage.
