Post subject:  I have a trac loc - What effect on MPG? warranty?
I went to change the oil in my Transfercase and front and rear ends, when I opened up the rear I found out I have a trac loc LSD. I put the correct fluid in and tested it. Seems a little weak, which makes sense for having 48K on the Jeep.

I still have 22k and 2 years left on my warranty. Should I bring it in and have new plates put in?

I mostly drive highway miles, and wondered what effect it has on my mileage?

I've never had any issues pulling the boat out with only two wheel drive, andthis will be my first winter with the liberty. I would think it's worth the 100 bucks to get it fixed.

a little weak - may be normal for the Trac loc - but see if they'll fix it
and then next time it wears out you can get a good one.....

Is it easier / better to replace the clutch packs / plates or get a new one?

What is a good alternative? One thing to consider is that if you are on snowy roads, it is better to have an open rear and front end as you can maintain directional stability easier.

Detroit TruTrac is best and does not wear out, but will cost around $1000 installed. We went for a new clutch pack for $100 under warranty. Good for about 50K miles.

I am a little more worried about not having an open rear end in the snow. Figured I will have to use full time 4x4 more because of that.

I think I will wait until this spring and bring it in. I doubt after the next one wears out I will ever replace it again.

I was really surprised I had one, there was no tag. When I opened it up to drain the oil there it was. I don't have many options, it's a sport with cruise, towing, and fog lights.

The MOPAR additive you are supposed to use will make the plates last longer.

Isn't one of the main reasons for NOT having an open diff is so you are LESS likely to get stuck in snow?

A open diff tracks better in snow/ice conditions then a LSD/locker,of course till you get stuck then a locker(not LSD) will be a great help.ARB all they way for that,totally open till you hit the switch then 100% locked.

when they're locked you'll spin both wheels instead of one..
watch out if its locked and the road is wet..you might slide the rear end out while turning a corner..

I have a positrack locker in one of my pickups..wet roads can be fun or a pain..depends on how much throttle is used..

what about ESP and other fancy slip control the Jeep has? traction control using the brakes?

effect on MPG..should be none.

That's not true trac loc is better in snow than open. Try driving a 3 series bmw open and one with LSD big difference! Only open axle with bmw's is 318 series and are shiat in snow.

It should be best to compare 4x4 vs 4x4. Try driving a locked front and rear vehicle on snow / ice. You can do very quick 360's with them... lol

Plus who would want to drive bmw anyways,there junk.

Starting from a dead stop a LSD will be better as long as your not to happy with the stupid pedal but once moving a open diff will always track better,more so when turning when a locked/LSD rear end will swing out where as a open diff will not(unless your to happy with the stupid pedal).

My GTO was worthless in the snow, LSD made it worse not better. Wide tires, LSD, Corvette engine = :furious:

I've driven 4x4s with lockers/LSD in the snow. If it's in 4x4 the front helps to keep the rear from doing 360s (within reason).

When driving on glare ice, a FWD car is about the best. I hate using AWD or 4x4 just to keep the rear behind me. Sucks down the MPGs...

I'm no noob at driving in the snow, 18 years and thousands of miles on ice in Minnesota. Sometimes it's just so slick and I have too far to go, I push it about as fast as I dare.

Adding the DTT up front(keep rear open) and running in AWD in snow/ice will be a pleasure,it will be point and shoot without worry.
