Thanks a bunch for the timing belt job on my Liberty.

During the job, here are some observations and things I learned from the experience.

1. One timing belt idle pulley was leaking grease and was dragging a little.
2. Alternator decoupler is starting to fail. It decouples but there is a lot of drag when it is decoupled (as compared to new decoupler on another diesel Jeep I own that needed an alternator replaced)
3. My new OEM thermostat (3 months old) has a manufacturing defect, the crimped/pressed fit top is strangely loose.
4. My intercooler has a small leak in it as evidenced by oil mist on it.
5. Removing the front bumper, grille, radiator and intercooler is a great way to create extra workspace for the timing belt job.
6. Dogs and chickens can co-exist
7. I wish I was 20 years younger, single, and better looking.....lots of eye candy in Sam's neighborhood.
8. Have Sam show you this great Pita restaurant.....the Philli Steak Pita was awesome and there's a great natural meds shop nearby should you have any ache's and pains from working on the vehicle.
9. My fav beer, Fat Tire, is swill for the masses ;-)

10. Last but not least, Sam knows his stuff and saved me a lot of time and money in helping me out on short notice. It probably would have taken me all weekend to do the same amount of work the first time. I guess I'm stuck with the Liberty for another 100k....I really wanted a new car but don't have an excuse to get one anymore.

BTW, during the job, I got a call for Immotion that they would refund my security deposit in its entirety...YIPPEEEEE!

Helped a friend do a timing belt today on his Jeep, after doing a few of these I'm starting to get em down pretty good, with the two of us working together total time for the job was about 4.5 hours, not looks like I'm getting these down where I can do them a little quicker, this by far was the easiest and quickest one yet. Also found another intercooler with that leak in the upper right corner by the inlet hose. Looks like that is a very common intercooler leak failure point for us, anyone preparing for a TB job should also be ready to JB weld the intercooler in that area to seal the leak.

Where are you finding the leaks, in the plastic or in the aluminum? Just wondering as mine is always wet with oil at the hose connection.

Sam, Some insight here regarding the CAC (Charge Air Cooler/aka Intercooler) leak: The cracks that you are finding is due to thermal fatigue of the aluminum. As the air enters the CAC from the turbo, it is quite hot. The heat cycles occur as part of normal use, i.e. it heats up as you drive, then it cools down when you stop. The cracks that you are seeing are likely just the tip of the iceberg. If you were to take off the side tank, you would likely see additonal cracks down that side of the cooler at every tube for at least several inches. Here is a link to a picture of what it looks like inside: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=cracked+ ... x=86&ty=21 These cracks cause the inlet air to stay heated and the discharge air/air into the intake is less cool than what a new CAC unit would provide. Therefore, you have less power, lower fuel economy and more wear on the engine and drivetrain trying to achieve the same level of acceleration. Replacing a bad CAC will restore power and fuel economy and pay for itself with the added/restored fuel mileage. Combine this changeout with the EHM and you will now have the cleanest and coolest air going into the Intake as possible. FWIW, Hoosier CRD

They are looking into the light-truck market currently, i.e. Dodge/Chevrolet/Ford. Admittedly, these are far bigger markets. Truth: I work for the company that owns Av-Tekk. I also own a Liberty CRD that I am soon to use for the job. I may have a small amount of influence here, but I'm not getting my hopes up. The thing is this though: Every Liberty WILL need the CAC replaced at some point. If the only source is the OE dealer, then the price stays high. Something like this in the aftermarket at least gives the owner, shop and vehicle, an option. We already sell the turbo for this mongrel, so having a CAC on the shelf does not seem too far fetched. It may take some other CRD owners to step up and say that they would buy one in order to get the ball rolling. FWIW, Hoosier CRD
