Can someone explain to me why a catch can on a gas motor wouldn't do the same thing th provent does. |

He's wondering if a catch can designed for a gasoline engine would work on our CRD instead of the EHM. In theory i would think it would work, but i didnt/am not doing the EHM since my stock intake hoses were fine for 155k so it clearly isn't a big issue. i think some things are blown a bit out of proportion on here with the CRD engine, but most are extremely useful and helpful to know in case i ever have any issues. |

Turbo diesels tend to have more blow by than naturally aspirated gassers. So you have a flow capacity issue. Also the can has two barbed fittings one for each valve cover, the CRD has one valve cover. Add to that you want oil mist separation so you need an oil separator, which the Provent is. I say, make your own with 2" PVC and 3/4" steel barbed fittings with a 3/8" drain hose and stuff it with coarse steel wool like I did or buy the Provent or another oil separator. I would leave the catch can for the Hemi V8 Guy's and Gals. |

flow rate's might be an issue - but the Provent is designed for 6-7 liter engines - so it's too big. just make sure there's something there to slow the flow - a filter, or steel wool or something similar -the oil is in suspension - so anything that slows down the flow should allow it to condense out. |

Our VOONDER PUCK is designed for a 2.8L engine, but it does not work wort a hoot. Having a over sized oil separator is cheap insurance. Besides German Engineers tend to sharpen their pencils too sharp and knock the electrons off the atoms that make up the molecules in the paper. Research the CP4X pump failures on some of the newer Diesel Pickups and TDIs if you want some examples of German Bean Counter Engineering. Reminds me of some of the ZF auto transmissions used by BMW & Mercedes Benz, JUNK! |

?????? our 2.8 was designed by Italians............ and I'm sure they'll finish it when they get around to it....... |

mtnyeti97 The Provent replaces a 3/4 inch hose that is a little over 2ft (if I remember). The concern is that your catch can may have smaller fittings and internal restrictions for blow through. The reason the Provent is added is to reduce the oil mist. I know that a catch can does this but it may not be as effective as a container with steel wool. Like Warp2diesel, I made my own. viewtopic.php?f=98&t=45359 |
