Post subject:  How can I assure I get the correct torque converter from...

I have the GDE full-torque eco tune and love it. I do have some problems with shudder when going up hill and also when towing. I am getting a new torque converter put in (probably by the dealership since I don't know where else to go in Austin) and want to know if the default TC will be the European model that I need or do I need to specify it? How would I know that they are using the correct one and not an older model one?

Also, when I do this, is there anything else besides the TC that I should replace?

Thanks!

The only way to tell what your getting is the part number on the unopened box. Short of tearing it apart and measuring the cushion springs there is no way to tell :dizzy:
A search should yeild the number for the newer "Euro" one :google:
A few have ordered the Euro online saving money and having it installed by their dealer. You might want to shop around and see if your dealer will come close to matching the on line price :SOMBRERO:

As I understand it now and I could be wrong the older non euro is the part called out. When mine was done I asked if part number of the newer one would be used (can't recall the number) and the service writer verified that it was the one called out.
You may want to think about a new "Front Pump". Actually there has been only one pump since the 1960's but the remaining one is commonly called the "front pump". Chrysler has redesigned ours with fewer parts and that means fewer parts for possible air leaks. Also there's a check valve in the pump housing that wears because of having a soft aluminum bore. You would at least be getting a new one but there are methods to upgrade that valve too. Sun Coast has rebuilt front pumps with improved check valves available.
My dealer did a fine job for me and I have no complaints but if I were paying for it, mine was replaced under my extended warranty, I would look for a reliable local transmission shop. But then you have to make sure they use the correct AT+4 trans fluid and not "one size fits all" :grim:
Sometimes you get what you pay for  The tech spent two and a half days doing mine and went over it with a fine tooth comb :JEEPIN:

I would contact Keith @ GDE to confirm current part number of euro TC and discuss seal/pump change. It adds a lot of expense and is rarely needed.

What is rarely needed? The TC, or the pump? Mine is shuddering pretty badly now, likely due to me towing regularly.

I believe he is talking about the pump only. You are correct that towing with the full-eco tune willl create the shudder.

FYI Bret
I ordered a Suncoast and had JeepMasters install it
(they did a good job - but had to keep it an extra day while they changed out the fluid for +4)

you could try that with the Suncoast or Euro.

I've also heard some good things about Just Jeeps - but I haven't tried them - they're on the wrong side of town.

Thank you all. Appreciate the input. I've used Jeep Masters here in Austin for a few things and have mostly been happy with them (although how the let my vehicle leave the shop with all but one of the bolts missing on my skid plate is still beyond me - it was literally hanging).

The dealership in Georgetown TX has a pretty good reputation and since I'm doing quite a bit of work (timing belt, water pump, thermostat, and TC, they cut me a decent deal compared to what the original quote was. I'm just paranoid about anyone working on the diesel engine without experience I guess.

Anyway, I'm going with the Euro, and we looked up parts numbers etc. to be sure we got the euro TC. Crossed fingers! :)

Thanks again all.
